I think I picked up somewhere that bathroom lighting now has to meet certain specifications due to moisture and so on.

My bathroom has a really awful looking light fitting in there and I want to replace with a spot light unit. What do I need to look for when buying a new fitting?

And what makes bathroom light fittings so much more expensive than other light fittings?

Thanks

12 volt downlighters can be used in any part of a bathroom ceiling as they come under SELV could also fit an inline ducting fan with a fan light as the intake vent. Fan light being a 4 inch fitting with a 12 volt downlighter built in to it.

that's what i'd like to do but it costs money and i'm a tight arse :D

No, you`re definately in the right forum :) Amazing what having a woman around can do to us poor chaps...

And, yes, after all that hide tanning earlier, i need a cold shower (which i seem to remember we have had quite a few of lately :(

Errr, i fear you`re in danger of leading a DIYer into trouble once again. The fact is ELV (& SELV in particular) circuits make a great deal of sense in bath/shower rooms on various levels - not least because 12v luminaires are more efficient at producing the crisp white light that suits such a location.

However, SELV does not negate either the need for suitable IP protection nor notification. That such products are exlicitly produced for such locations means they`ll no doubt satisfy the former (because they`ve been IP65 or > insulated) but its NOT merely because they`re SELV - its that they have been made suitable for zone1.

So if you are to advise `ordinary persons` (who tend to regard what we tell em as Gospel) then please take care that such advice is accurate :)

Product brochures can only teach someone so much - i think you`ll find the BRB quite enlightening ;)
