smudgey

hi all,
i was just looking for some advice/information if possible. i am nearly 27 years old and i am thinking about trying a new trade so i am currently looking at getting involved in the electrical business. i have no experience apart from knowing the basics of electrics, after researching online i have come across several courses that claim no experience is necessary to take them. so if i were to take the C&G 2365 Electrical Installation Diploma Level 2 course and successfully complete it, what would my options/chances be of actually getting a job/work? i have heard a few things about electricians mate if people could explain to me what this is? due to this site being what it is i could not think of anywhere else for better advice and any advice would be much appreciated in helping me decide my next move as the course is quite expensive and a long way to travel. thanks.

Depends where you want to work. The 2365 will still leave you short of the required qualification to get a JIB card, the industry recognised standard for an electrician. Many sites request this standard and you may find it difficult to get industrial/commercial work without it.
The 2365 will give you your underpinning knowledge, but I bet you could get it cheaper than you have been quoted. Is it a condensed course ? if so it will be a rip off, and your local college could probably do it for half the price and turn it into a NVQ3.

An electrician's mate is someone who works alongside the qualified electrician, someone traditionally who knows the job but lacks the qualifications. This is still a skilled job and you would be hard pushed to find work with zero experience.

smudgey I'm doing something similar but im about half way through my course, ive been learning and practical training for about 15 months , the 2365 can go up to a NVQ level 3 aslong as your undertaking electrical work ect . Ive already been in touch with my local college and as long as im employed and preforming electrical installs and the company im employed with agree , you can further 2365 to a level 3 NVQ. hope this helps.

the course is ÂŁ3000 over either a solid 7week block or over weekends, i would have to take the weekend courses as im in fulltime work and will still need money coming in to support the course and family. The problem with my local colleges is they are only offering full time courses. The level3 course can only be taken by those who have completed the level2 first at the place i am looking at. (level3 another ÂŁ3000!) So let me ask you, if i were to complete the level 2 would i have a reasonable chance of being an electricians mate? Then go onto do the level3 and other necessary quals at a later date. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for the reply. My local colleges were only offering full time courses which is no good for me ad im in full time work and will still need money coming in to support the course/family. Im aware of the level3 course but the place im looking at doing the level 2 will only let you do level 3 if you have completed the level 2 course. So i think my plan foor the moment will be to complete the level 2 course then try getting in as a sparkys mate and going on to do the level 3 and other necessary quals from there...if thst mskes sense.

As others here have advised, go for the local college over these overpriced rip-off training centres that are basically only after your cash!!

Before you even contemplate entering any course, ...what is your maths like?? You'll need to be at least up to a CSE C level or better, or you're going to have a really hard time when it comes to the calculus side of things!!
