If I have a helper I use a pair of GPO 704B linesmans 'phones, much more fun and saves running about, especially if the cable is long or in a different room. You can also tell the other bloke what to mark the conductor as.
 
connect a diode across the 2 cores at one end. then use your meter at the other. that will prove continuity and also polarity. then IR test the cores to the sheath.
