Been sorting through my toolbag and getting ready for tomorrow's job. For years I've had a cable bending tool to put a nice clean bend in tails etc., but it seems to have been nicked at some point. :( Any recommendations for a replacement? Can't find anything exactly like the one I had.

I think bending tails by hand Is absolutely fine and I think you are making the job hard for yourself with a bender. Put my tails and your tails next to each other and I very much doubt you could see the difference. Back when I was taught we used hand and I've worked with a lot of electricians on all different kinds of sites and have never seen anyone using one?

when comint into CU with tails from the bottom of the CU, and i have to bend them 180, i find it's easiest to leave an extra 3" on the tails, pull them up out of the top of the CU, bend, then cut to length and strip, then pull spare back down through CU entry holes. this way, the cut of the conductors is straight, as when bending, the conductor strands pull out of alignment, giving a diagonal end if not trimmed after.

Agree but only if were talking about the smaller tails/conductors. When you get to say 70mm and upwards you would definitely need a dressing tool, especially when space is limited and/or a multi-core cable isn't lining up too well with connection points!! Try dressing/bending say 240mm conductors from a misaligned SWA cable by hand...lol!!

Okay, I see I am alone in sometimes using a tool to bend my tails. Does that mean it's wrong though?? I often bend them by hand too, depends on CU layout, whether it's already on the wall etc. Anyway, sorry for mentioning it. Sulk. :)

There's nothing wrong with using a bender or not using a bender. Whatever works for you and whatever you're happy with is perfectly OK.

Happy New Year. :)

Of course it's not wrong, all quality work will always be acceptable

You are also now awarded the badge of "Tail bender 1st class"
(Biff will no doubt present you one of his award medals)

So that people do not get the wring idea,be sure you tell people its to do with "cable" lol

Not at all M8, we all have our own methods, nothing wrong with your question, I have never used a tool myself unless it is for straightening PYRO, I can even bend a 20mm2 bit of conduit without a bender :smartass2: However If I had a bending tool and the tails were big enough I would use it, It doesn't mean your wrong, just that it isn't the norm Bud

This reminds me of when I was an apprentice and was taught to bend conduit using a hardwood block as the electrician did not like the pipe benders, he preferred his block and had a series of holes drilled also for meter tails etc.
