Discuss best buy quality 12 way 17th edition consumer unit in the Electrical Tools and Products area at ElectriciansForums.net

Wylex, proteus, mk, volex, vytec, contactum..........No thanks!

Hager all day long, if not then crabtree, however the 80A RCD's in the crabtree boards are a Achilles heel

Any opinions or experiences with Schneider consumer units would be appreciated ?

Schneider are top kit, usually the most expensive too which is why you probably haven't really seen then in the domestic world. There a massive company, used a lot in industrial and commercial settings which is where I use them. Used to be Merlin Gerin and also own square d.

Domestic Schneider boards are just rebadged square d. They still do the range with the fixed busbar with plug in mcbs too.

Schneider gear is excellent, we use loads of their three phase boards in schools, for councils, factories etc..

I really like contactum metal units, proper bit of kit not some plastic crap.
when looking for something cheap then CED is not thad bad, has internal connections made of solid wire not stranded, looks tidy. blastic din rail in them unfortunately.

Love it how Proteus has got such a terrible reputation, with me aswell - but yet they're still in business. Who the hell funds them :| it's best off down the toilet.

Hager, Schneider, MK for me.

Don't mind wylex when the customer doesn't fancy paying for Hager.

I like fitting the CED Consumer units and never had a problem with their quality. What a pity they don't do a dual rcd 10 way?

I also like the Wylex 10 way dual rcd box which has a narrow 230mm width. This means it often fits-in when others won't. The only issue I've had with Wylex, is that the breakers hate plaster, mortar or brick dust anywhere near them! They will fail, so keep them clean always!!

I've fit loads of BG boards, ( cheaper at B&Q than electrifix) quite impressed, they are quite ridgid, as tectrix says loads of room, proper slots inside lid for the stickers so they look neat, but are in your face as soon as the lid is opened, buzz bar is quality, cant cut it with my teeth like the proteus my local city electrics stock! built in level so if you've had a few the night before its perfectly plum!
only downfall i feel is the quarter turn locking nuts for the front, they can be turned with a fingernail, so make sure you put a blob of white silicone on em, to make sure a screwdriver is needed to remove them!!
