hi guys, anyone used one of those BG consumer units? seen them advertised fully loaded for 50 quid! and a customer im pricing for a board chamge has insisted on one because they "look nice and glossy" lol

The ones ive fitted have been good. Fairly sturdy plastic. Not had one with a good level in it yet and the 2nd rcd neutral cable sometimes shows too much copper for my liking. But for the price you can't go wrong

too much copper? all 3 neutral bars are completely exposed anyway.
and i agree the levels are pointless, a guy i was working with tried to pull me up as the little toy level inside was showing out, but the board was butted right upto the top of the ceiling and it was infact, dead level!

I just dont like seeing exposed copper on the connections of MCB's and RCD's. Personally i think it makes the install look untidy

look for the price its either BG or:

Fitted 1 of these nice board for price easy to fit the level is a waste of time and one of the factory fit cables on the rcd had a bit to much copper showing so needed a trim but all in all god for the money.

Too much copper?

It good old Wylex that like to have the copper on show at every termination.

BG have at least crimped pins to the ends of the RCD leas and if these are not to your liking, then at small piece of heatshrink does the trick

I fitted one to the accommodation i currently reside in, and TBH I can't fault them. They are manufactured to the relevant standard, and if fitted correctly will pose no problems. Why pay more for a 'name' when these more than do the job? FB snobbery.

I use Hager boards, not for snobbery but purely practical/business reasons.

1) I have MCBs RCDs and RCBOs to suit in stock.
2) It's much more difficult for a customer to say "but they're only ÂŁ--- in B&Q!".
3) I'm used to using them so familiar with their foibles (goes for any kit you use a lot of).
4) They're only an extra tenner when compared to the 'budget' units.
5) I'm old and change frigthtens me :)

Where do you buy them from

CEF have the 10 way on offer at the moment and carry them in stock, WILTS also carry them in stock. If you have more time to order them you can get them from a few online suppliers, and there are always a few sellers on eBay which can throw up a bargain.

I believed that for the IP rating a CCU needs that the unit "should not be able to be opened without the use of a tool"

I opened one in Screwfix yesterday with my fingernails. I appreciate that when you lot have bolted it to a non-flat wall it will be harder to open though!

I have fitted 10 of these BG boards from screwfix of different sizes. Very good & loads of room. Extra breakers are not stock items though. Contactum is the worst, no room once a rcbo is fitted

Contactum and BG are very very similar, as in the only difference I see is the brand label (even the technical information of the products is the same font and placing). Their old boards were a bit tight but I just fitted the 16 way one from TLC and surprise surprise it's the same white with internal level as the BG versions...loads of room for RCBOs in it :)

You must have found that quite insulting!

Sorry, couldn't resist ;)
