Hi all

I have recently started a job in building services maintenance. Coming from a domestic background, this is turning into a steep learning curve as they have thrown me in at the deep end and left to get on with it as an electrician knows everything right!? Anyway, my main concern is boiler houses and the heating controls. Everything seems ancient and built by Satchwell. Is there any info out there or good books explaining about interlocks and control panels etc as it's all a bit daunting and different to the domestic Y plans I have been used to. Most of the guys on this firm are gas/ combustion engineers and they won't touch any of it!

Cheers

is the encyclopedia useful to electricians or more biased to maintenence electricians?

It is partly of historical interest these days, but I have found it to be useful as an electrician.
You have to remember that it was written in the time of the 10th edition so does contain a lot of old fashioned values, common sense, good solid information so would be quite alien to many modern readers.

You only have to look up the definition of an electrician to realise that some problems have been around a lot longer than you'd think. You'll find it warns against the perils of the 'pseudo electrician' and suggests that at least 3 years of apprenticeship with a contractor of good repute is essential. (Ring any bells?)

It’s from 1938 and is aimed at “The Working Electrician”.

If you need the theory of how out of the ordinary things work then it’s very useful. There’s stuff you’ll not find in modern text books.

E54 would like the section on earthing, you’d struggle to meet it.

Such as the bit where 8 x 1" diameter pipes driven to 8' deep and spaced 10' apart is suggested as a fairly representative installation of earth electrodes?

At least they knew how to install a TT system in those days!! Bloody far cry from just banging in a 1.2 metre X 3/8'' twig Willy Nilly and thinking that's it, that's a TT system!! lol!! I bet it doesn't mention anywhere about 200/100ohms in that 1938 publication either... lol!!
