I have a customer who wants an extractor fan in her bathroom. I visited and noted lack of main bonding to gas and no RCD protection for the property. Due to cost she does not want extra work done (yet). As the gas bonding is very straight forward (1 meter of 10mm and a clip) I would be happy to do that myself. But the question is, could i then certify this job and state that RCD protection is required?

Unless you are repacing an existing extractor fan, you will have to provide RCD protection.
That protection should be for the whole circuit that the fan is connected to (although some will argue differently).
The bonding does not require upgrading, as it will not affect the operation of the safety method applied to the addition.

i thought the new updated 17th edition regs would allow him to fit a 12v selv extract fan in a bathroom with no RCD protection as long as the transformer is located externally?
Cant you book it in in january!

He states there is NO MPB present to the gas service at all though....131.8 states arrangements must be adequate....if it's not present, it cant be deemed adequate surely?
The requirements of 131.8, now changed to 132.16 are that the bonding arrangements are adequate if necessary for the protective measure applied for the safety of the addition.
If this is to be protected by an RCD, then bonding is not necessary.

The requirement has changed to: must provide RCD protection for all low voltage circuits of the location.
As such the low voltage part of the circuit, still requires RCD protection.

Thanks for the constructive preply chaps.

I have quoted for the job to include 12v fan with Fused spur and transformer, both external to the bathroom. Also for the provision of RCD for that circuit. (Which she does want, but at a later date).

Welchyboy has mentioned as has a colleague that, as the LV is not in the bathroom only the SELV fan, therefore the RCD was not essential but should be noted as a required improvement, for the bathroom lighting circuit, when it comes to producing the test certificate for the job.

If this was the case, the fan installation and the RCD improvement could be separated. Improving my chances of landing the job, over someone who knows better/ doesn’t give a ----.

If the main bonding is goin to be installed and up to scratch i personally would have no problem issuing a cert as is, without RCD protection, as the fan is selv and only cables carrying 12v would be entering the bathroom an rcd will not have any further safety benefits anyway to your addition, (as long as your not chasing in any LV cables) crack on i say.

Having said that is the job really that tight you couldnt get away with installing an RCD spur for the bathroom lighting circuit?

Finally....you do realise when people say 'ill get that done at a later date' that means they have no intention of getting it done whatsoeva!
