hello there
a quick question.
what methods would you use to bond a large (possibly 4inch?) gas pipe???
thanks

If you look for a flange joint along the run of the pipe you’ll find a copper strap on one bolt linking the 2 sections. Bond to that. Have the line depressurised first though unless you’ve got a set of spark resistant spanners. Yes they do make them, before we get comments about sparks and tools not going together.

"BS 951: 1999 states that clamps manufactured to that standard are intended to be used singly. Linking two or more BS 951clamps together to encircle a pipe diameter larger than a single clamp is intended for is therefore considered to be an unsatisfactory connection method, and a departure from Regulations 526.1 and/or 526.2."

With a 4” pipe it will be welded steel. But in the runs there has to be flanged joints, you earth the nearest flange to the supply point. If a plant is using that much gas don’t take the p*ss with the CPC size either!

Big is beautiful, the last gas fired plant I did I ran 1” X 1/8” copper tape from the 11KV incomer lead sheath to the plant earth bar. Then the same copper tape to the water and gas intakes. The 11KV incomer was earthed at the main earth nest.

When split the gas pipe gave a better earth gradient reading than the earth nest!

The water intake was even better, an old pipe had been diverted to feed the plant. 50 years of leaky steel pipes made a fantastic earth path!

Go for a connection at a flange joint.
