Adam I dont really do politics
I'm sure I've posted this here before but that reminds me of this advert:

when ever Boris Johnson is on the news, I cringe knowing that the world is watching and we some how picked him to run our capital city.
Personal opinion, the man is a fool, ditherer, silver spooned and does not live in reality. Not the best man to represent London/England imho. Is he the best this country has to offer? I would rather see one of the Dragon's Den in charge, at least they know how much a loaf of bread costs!
Is this mainly based on his image?
As I said before image seems to be crucial for a politician, and Boris seems to offer something different - instead of a bland, privately educated, well dressed man in a suit being chauffeur driven around in a luxury sedan, Boris is a mildly amusing (privately educated) scruffy buffoon on a bicycle, which gives him a unique selling point.
So this begs the question - who would you rather vote for as a politician, whether it be MP or PM?
People say they want a 'man of the people' but they didn't seem to like 'the grocer's daughter' (remember now the 'female vote' is important). I think whoever is running for MP will put on their politest voice and best suit, just as you would for a job interview.
Is Boris saying a smart suit doesn't matter if you're a good politician, trying to appeal to people who don't wear suits on a daily basis, or just trying to stand out amongst other politicians?
Maybe a ditzy asian nail technician with tattoos and lots of boozy pics on facebook would tick all the boxes? Would you vote for her as your MP?
