Hi there. I am just about to start a job that entails installing a load of brick style lights into railway sleepers. Any thoughts on the best way to cut the hole out? I was thinking of drilling a load of holes with a wooden spade bit inside the shape of the hole then chiselling any corners out. Does anyone have a better idea???!
Thanks,
Dave.

Suggest get someone else to do it, too cold to work outside try again in 4 months. Easier to get a nice round light instead and use a drill - far better looking. Plus too many of the brick lights are poor quality unless paying ÂŁ's.

Eh ? It's one of the mildest Decembers ever recorded !:tongue3:

If they are proper sleepers you will have your work cut out. Multicutter will be useless it doesn't take enough material out and the blades won't last 2 minutes. Best bet is either use a GOOD router with a custom made jig, or tell the customer its a crap idea and install circular ones.

I've done this for a mate. The best thing to do is get a chippy to do it.
I used a combination of router, drill with a sharp auger bit, sds wood chisel and a proper wood chisel.
It took nearly all day to get 6 cut in to new sleepers, then about and hour to connect them up.

We used loads of them on the farm, they are a challenge to work with. I bored some with a hand auger in those days . I developed arms like Garth.

I had to cut up some railway sleepers to create a garden path. Thought I'd go to the tool hire shop and rent out a large circular saw to do it, but they wouldn't hire me one when I told them what I was cutting. Can see why, got through several blades, and knackered me own saw. Tis the bitumen in the things. Best of luck.

Was thinking of investing in one of these multi tools not used one but herd great things about them priced a dewalt cordless one up about ÂŁ180. Where's the best place or cheapest place to get one

I just got a Dewalt one from ebay for my mate for that price in a T-stak box with 37 piece accessories .
The beauty of the Dewalt -it has a work light on it . It is mint.

I will PM you the link if you want

Sorry it is corded.
