So I'm a couple of months into this course and currently losing enthusiasm since this year seems mainly irrelevant and not remotely what I expected when I applied for these courses a couple of years ago.
We're currently doing a unit where the assignment is to write a full CV and covering letter, which seems most people on the course will need to make it up to meet the requirements to pass anyway.
In my opinion this time would be better suited learning more aspects of electrical work we're likely to be doing, leading to it being extremely frustrating, there seems to be a few in my class at least who feel the same.

Basically I wanted to rant and ask how anyone else is finding/found doing these types of subjects whilst learning

I think sections like this are probably not popular but necessary. It's all well and good learning just electrical subjects but if you have no idea on how to find work/promote yourself/build a cv/build a portfolio etc then you'll come up short every time and all the vital electrical knowledge you've learnt will be of no use.

It's all relevant

I can fully understand the frustration of wanting to learn, paying for the privilege and then being asked to cover something irrelevant.
However think of it as a small part of the whole learning process and that once this is done you are now able to progress to better things, and even so you may have learnt something, even if it was not what you were hoping to learn.

Leo im in the same boat m8 it is so frustrating im currently on the same module as you and as much as i explained i have an excellent c.v and covering letter i still have to sit and write another one to how the college wants it to be formatted.
When I was made redundant I used the resources the company provided and one of which was a 5 day yes 5 day course on covering letters and c.v's I learnt loads and my college would not accept this experience as part of the level 3 assignment.
Basically i had to bite the bullet and do as i was asked, the covering letter and cv was nowhere near as good as i had originally but it was part of the course. Level 3 is nearly all theory based and very little practical but we have to endure it.
Ahhhh rant over i feel so much better im not the only one in this situation keep at it m8 it will get better.

you gotta remember that really this is a course designed for college kids to take while gaining the practical experience as an apprentice or mate on site. so some of the stuff will be a lot more relevant to them than if doing it as an adult with a full CV already.

on the plus side this means you can cruise through the course, skip days, spend all lesson hours on IET forums, literally do just enough to pass, and spend more time reading up yourself on electrical theory, practise and on sites like this! or start saving for the degree in electrical engineering.. :D

disclaimer: this is not advice per se, and nor will it particularly endear you to the tutor ;)

Apolagies Karin I may have assumed Leo was a mature student. You stated this course is designed for college kids? I will disagree with you there as will a few other mature students. As for missing days on the level 3, not advisable as its the most intense year connected with electrical theory.

hi uksrevivor, the comment about taking classes easy was intended tongue in cheek to suggest looking positively at the situation and making the most of your time to further learning. i also found it much the same as both of you (although the science section learning about motors and the like was great). i've mentioned before that i actually feel i got more out of the course than most others in my class because i'd done my own further learning and was able to pester the tutor about other things.

i would still maintain that the syllabus is ultimately aimed at people leaving school and starting apprentiships. the fact that it is currently the only pathway to qualification means that courses will of course be available for mature students, and even delivered in a different way, but the core assignments will all still have to be passed.
