Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone would be kind enough to share their experience of the 2396 course please?

Have you found it useful for your work and why?
Did you enjoy it?
Would you recommend it.

I'm considering having a go, not that I need it necessarily but fancy a challenge and hope it might help improve my knowledge and understanding of design.

My background is 18years in the trade, 1st 8 years mixture of commercial, industrial & domestic. The last 10 years working for self, mostly domestic with some small commercial & Industrial work occasionally. Did an apprenticeship in the late 90's, completed C & G 2360. Not done much technical training since.

Thanks

I would go for it. There's a few on here that have completed it and I don't think anyone regretted it.

It's assessed in two parts. Firstly an exam which I think is 3 hours, and also a coursework project which is usually to design the installation of a commercial type premises.

If you enjoy electrical work and want a more in depth understanding, its a great course to do.

Thanks for your view, it sounds good.

I've found a local course for ÂŁ850 + vat plus ÂŁ50 exam fee. Might be on the expensive side but it only 5 mins from home.

They mention a 40 hour project. Is 40 hours a realistic timescale?

Thanks again

It's a great course. The 40 hour project will take much longer, I spent absolutely ages on it but it was a labour of love.

The written exam is tuff

Don't beat yourself up when you don't finish the written exam either. I had pen to paper for three hours solid, I didn't stop writing even for a minute, I'm a pretty fast writer and even then the last 20% of the paper was left blank! I wouldn't regard the content to be particularly difficult for anyone who has experience of designing circuits, but you better know it all like the back of your hand! There isn't a moment to even think about your answers to questions as the sheer volume of writing they expect you to get on the paper in three hours is absolutely mind boggling!

The exam needs to be four hours minimum!

The project. 80 hours minimum. I really enjoyed it though. If you don't know how to use MS Excel, I'd learn pretty sharpish.

Good luck if you go for it. I certainly think it's a qual that sorts the wheat from the chaff.

Wow! the exam sounds like a beast! I suppose it depends on the college or training centre but did you find the classroom tuition good/helpful? Or is it a case of - here are the scenarios, there's your regs book and guidance notes, off you go, get on with it?

I might have to do some swatting up before the course even starts.

Thanks all

The lecturer taught us most of what we needed to know. However, you do need a good understanding before you start the course. I was fortunate that I'd had the chance to do the 2394/5 a couple of months before, so my brain was still in C&G mode.
