yeah, your eyes lol, look for the nearest socket or switch, there should be cables horizontally or verticallly of these!!!

I use a Newlec fuse/cable finder which is only about ÂŁ50.Also sold under other names like Amprobe and Dilog. The cable tracing feature is very good and I find it better than using a stud/pipe/cable detector.Just plug the transmitter into a 13A socket and you can easily trace any live cable. In older properties the cables buried in walls are often anything but straight and in correct zones.

I use the Newlec one, its only got a connector for sockets, I keep meaning to make up an adaptor lead but never got around to it, but could have used it several times.
Seems to work OK, even on a three phase board, just need to get the sensitivity right.

The finder from test meter looks OK and is probably just as good as any, the very cheap ones are not worth it, but they are all a bit vague really I find.

Generally the types that are a two part system comprising of a generator/transmitter and a detector/receiver are better than a simple one piece tracer that detects the magnetic/electric field of a powered cable. A digital coded matched transmitter and receiver pair are more sensitive, discriminating and accurate than an analogue generator and detector pair. The two part systems come in three power types:- 1) Battery powered transmitter and receiver, only suitable for use on a de-energised circuit or installation. 2) Installation circuit powered transmitter and battery powered receiver, this system is only suitable for an energised circuit. 3) A combination kit with a transmitter can use either mode of power.

I have one of the two part locators which works on live or dead cables. It's like this one:Test4less Electrical & Gas Test Equipment Distributor - Details For Advanced Testmate PCM-100 Cable Locator Testmate PCM-100 Cable Locator
although mine has a different name on it.

Good for finding dead cable runs in walls. I'm not quite so convinced about its ability to find a specific circuit in a crowded DB, although I've not used it much yet, so maybe need to learn to get the best out of it.

Edit: Oops, I meant to put this link up:
CLS20 Cable Locator Set

Like I said, sold under various names.
