Discuss Cable Joint in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Use mechanical connectors in a cast resin joint. You don’t say what the operating voltage is.

Thought as much. Where are you based?

300mm[SUP]2[/SUP] triplex is getting to be the standard for MV repair work. You could look at Reychem cold shrink kits designed for a trifurcating joint.

I notice he’s cleared off now he’s got his answer.

You’d think I’d learn to keep my gob shut after all the years I’ve spent on international forums.

I should have left him with Des’s post 14

A fair amount of our 11KV network used 19/.044 (22mm[SUP]2[/SUP]). The only cable we stocked was 95mm[SUP]2[/SUP]. There’s an art to soldering them together.

Parts of the original 1930’s system looked like a string of beads with joints and different sized cables. So long as the protection is set for the lowest rated cable it’s fine.

You get reducing ferrules, sometimes called offset ferrules but I've only ever seen them change by one conductor size so you'd probably need to go first to 185 to 240mm then up to 300mm in two steps rather than one big step.

As soon as he mentioned 300/185 it gave the game away.

A trifurcating joint before new switchgear is common practise in the UK now as the new stuff is designed for 300mm[SUP]2[/SUP] triplex terminations. Say a new transformer and tee switch is to be installed on an existing 185mm[SUP]2[/SUP] 3c ring, two joints have to be installed to enable termination. One joint would have to be installed anyway as obviously the one of the two cut ends of the cable would be too short.

As i say, seen these ''Triplex'' cables around, but never used them on my projects it's all been 3 core SWA cables direct buried or ducted or AWA singles in ducts...

Your not working to a standard specification unlike UKPN who are. I’ve got to admit, I had to read through the spec twice to be sure I’d read it properly.

I’ve never had dealings with trifurcated joints as they wouldn’t meet the company spec.
