that's not much help,
Trust me on this, it's a lot of help. As Onions says there are many variables which will affect the cable selection and consulting a local electrician is the best course of action as it's nigh on impossible for any of us to give the correct advice over the net. You can probably save a few quid on the job by digging the trench and running the cable yourself (but not backfilling it) but that's about as far as it goes. I'm sorry if you think I'm raining on your parade but it's the best advice I can give.
If you post up your rough location one of our members will be local and be happy to help you out.

there is a 4" duct from the meter to the gable of the house (25m)at 1 and a half meter's deep. It's then up through the cavity wall into the attic and over to the fuse board (20M) the fuse in the meter box is a 63amp, and there will be no extreme's in the ambient temp.

These sort of threads intreague me.

He has a duct installed and doesn't know what to put in it?

OP - have you fallen out with your sparky or have you got his prices and got a shock?

Think hes getting the message this isnt a calc you can acheive without a site visit.... and thats going to need an electrician 'competent' also he expresses from meter to fuseboard ...really think he's in for a shock when he finds out he cant do this without protecting the cable with a fuse on the consumers side......

Underground in ducting, insulation in loft lengthh of run etc etc and he wants us to give a size off the cuff...... We spend years learning these calcs to get them correct we are not in the habit of giving free design schemes so any Jo - bloggs can endanger his life doing something that need proffesional assessment.

The skill required of an electrician to calculate and design an installation can sometimes be underestimated by the layman
A person with good practical skills often is unaware of considerations that are essential for the safety of the installation and its users

Getting things wrong can and does have serious consequences, foregoing the use of a skilled electrician because of perceived ease of the work.in order to save money, or because of a higher than actual level of believed competence to do the work,it is very negligent of you

Now thats the nice way to tell you, here is the not so nice
For goodness sake, leave this work well alone, you don't have a clue and your intended actions could be catastrophic
