Discuss Can I, Can't I? in the Periodic Inspection Reporting & Certification area at ElectriciansForums.net

That one should be in the Tate Gallery:rolleyes: what shall we call it???????????????? (polite answers only). On a more serious note am I correct that you are part P only and not assessed for PIRs by NICEIC yet they have stated that it is ok for you to do PIR without the extra dosh being handed over.

Chris

Yep that's right Domestic Installer with no 2391....yet! :D They didn't even want paying for me to upgrade to Domestic PIR do-er....or what ever the hell that have thought up this week for ÂŁ500!!
They were absolutely insistent that the customer contact them regarding a complaint, before I start though. I think the customer was a bit taken aback as she didn't want to pursue the issue with the ex sparky.
I dunno. We'll see what happens.......she is adamant that they want the certification, though.

What a mess!

As said, where is the quality and standard of work gone?the biggest joy of my job is standard back and having something to be proud of, something your happy for anyone to see and show it off, saying "I did that"

Not something to be ashamed of.

I enjoy my job and I can sleep at night..

There's too many people that don't give a ....!

I agree! There's nothing more satisfying than leaving behind a work of art!!

I'm worried one day that a customer may have to have me "removed" from their premises as I won't want to leave the work behind!! :D....but then I always was little strange!!

If your strange, then I am also, lol.

I know some sparks that do work very quick, and I've said to people I'll never be as quick as them, I will always take longer to do the same job. But that's my choice, anyone can rush a job, make a pants job of it, just to get the money in there hands, this just isn't my way of working or thinking, I have a different attitude towards work. I know I'll never be the richest sparky out there. But atleast I will sleep at night

I'm right there with you Sid!
I traced back a fault in a lighting circuit today that 2 electricians had failed with. Took me 3 hours in a dusty loft with just a belligerent wasp to keep me company, before I finally uncovered the dodgy connection, under a chipboard floor panel, where every single light in the house was interconnected using choc blocks......The best a sparks had been able to do until then was to get power to one kitchen light and a bathroom light.
'Twas a proud moment when I finally announced "let there be light!" lol!!:D

Is the issue not about competency? I thought that any electrician can inspect and test an installation, provided he is competent to do so. I was taught how to inspect and test whilst doing my city and guilds. I was assessed again whilst doing my NVQ3. I then took the 2391 just because employers were asking for it. Why would they teach inspection and testing and then assess you on it, if you are not allowed to do it? Im not 100% sure, so i would be grateful if anyone who actually knows?

I think there is a difference between testing and certifying your own work, particularly for someone who is newly qualified, and being able to competently I & T all installations in the land which are many and varied. To be competent doing a PIR you need to be very experienced as well. There is a world of difference between a small domestic, a factory unit or a Garage. :)

Agree that this is perhaps not very neat, but...

Is the use of terminal strip to extend really that bad inside the CU? If there were lots to do I would prefer to do it outside the CU in an adaptable box but if only one or two would it not look neater to do it inside?

And while we're here, terminal strips, crimps or wagos? I think I'd go for wagos or crimps over terminals.

Cheers lads.

It would seem that there is a gap in the industry for a new qualification, most recognised bodies ECA NICEIC etc recognise the domestic installer qualification in it's own right, surely there is opening here for a test and inspect along with PIR for domestic installations only. Most of the mails on the forum deal with the domestic market I personally would have no interest in commercial and industrial installations because at no time am I involved in them, Horses for courses I say.

The NICEIC already do a domestic periodic inspection course, which is done in virtual reality (all you 70/80's kids think of Doom). I was lucky enough to be invited on the pilot scheme, and it was very good indeed. Show's you what is required both to do the safe isolation, testing and inspecting and filling in the certification.

It's on their training books, so may be worth giving it a go if you're learning or a bit rusty. Or just want to make sure what you're doing is correct, which I found it was (thank god!).
