Can someone explain Part-P to me.....

Hi,

Basically I've been informed by someone that i need my part P....

Im apprentice trained fully qualified electrician with a gold JIB card, NVQ 3, AM2 17th edition etc etc... and have been working mainly in industrial installations for the last 5 years.

I was always under the impressions part-p does not really have a place within my line of works plus my current level of qualification superceeded part-p as NVQ 3 covers it.

Could someone just give me the run down....

Part P is a document. It's the electrical safety in dwellings part of the building regs.

read lee's link. it tells what domestic work is notifiable. part p is totally irrelevant to commercial and industrial work. don't be conned into paying for a "part p" course. total money spinning racket.

As an electrician installing circuits, etc. you need to comply with all of the building regulations, this is something that you would do (I hope) as a standard thing within your job.

If you are working in a place where people live and sleep, but not within an institution, i.e. a dwelling, then work on buildings with a common power supply and the environs of that dwelling are covered by part P of the building regulations.
This part is intended to increase electrical safety in dwellings.
In the approved document LeeSparkyKent links to there is a requirement (in England), if working in a dwelling, to inform building control of new circuits, new consumer units, alterations in swimming pols and saunas and in the zones of a room containing a bath or shower, this may most cost effectively be done by registering with a self certification body, but may also be done by direct advance notification to building control.

Your level of electrical qualification is immaterial to Part P as it is part of the building regulations not the wiring regulations.
As Telectrix has said if you read the approved document P, understand and apply it where relevant then you would be competent in "Part P".
I second the do not take one of the courses advice.

20 questions on building regs related to part p (electric). Just done it trough work.(dont ask as we mainly do industrial ) Never looked at book until exam. 20 multi choice questions using book. 95%. As said its just a certificate to say you under stand building regs, or can read a book.
