hi all

we never use capping on our installations and i was just wondering would it be faster & cheaper than using cable clips?? any thoughts would be appreciated.

cheers
gary

you just put the torch perpendicular to the wall and shine the torch along the surface this then causes shadows at the points where there are raised or lower points in the plaster. The drops are usually the raised areas makes them stand out like a dogs . Sorry Jason

Makes sense but can see myself working at arms length scribbling :D

saying that no difference to a detector a torch is less costly than a detector

another fab use for it is metal back boxes- if you end up with a too deep hole, as in some of my chalk walled houses I have worked on,(crumbles away ! ) fill it with the plaster , push in the back box and hold, and its set. as you feel it firming up, push in through the holes in the back box your wall plugs, the yelow ones will fit the predrilled holes in all standard back boxes, few mins later and in go the screws. Job done. No more packing out, fiddling around, never really quite level or flush, perfect job every time. you can carvethis stuff with a chisel for about a half hour, usefull for when you suddenly notice you forgot to put a grommet in !

Yea, top tips! And I have a bag of one coat that has been sitting about since I realsied it was rubbish for actual plastering. Tidyyyyyy! Got a load of helacons through today as well... gonna be saving time left, right and centre!

I use a metal / volt detector
Me to !!! however expanded metal mesh sends mine crazy, in any case, this is obviously not a serious method- I have resorted to it when starting with a dead cable that has to come out to see where it goes without having to peel it ut of the wall. I was able to track it back to a point where it would of been a legal wiring run if it fed an electrical acccesorie. I cut in a back box and terminated it inside. Blank plate on the front and all legal. Had to do this because the wire it self was a spur from the wire that fed the garage, the only one I couldnt remove because it was JB from that cable inside a concrete floor. I obviously couldnt leave a cut off live wire in a wall, and the wire run to the garage had to remain in, as it also ran through a concrete kitchen floor. nightmare job, but all safe and legal.

we only use 20mm conduit, only heard of capping when b&q came to town I use it for alarm cables never for t&e ,can see the benefits of capping though but its always pipe and tracked into wall if its a rewire we use the twin wheel saw with a hoover attached .
Do you guys use capping for new builds?
I have a guy who tracks the house out with a compressor before I start makes things easy
