That's not normal, well at least not around my area. We live without security systems and no burglar bars, just a normal fence. Touch wood we've had a few minor vehicle break-in's around the area but we've been lucky so far. Maybe some of the more remote farming areas have the kind of siege mentality you talk about but not the metro areas.

Yea its a different world out there, I have a brother in law in Pretoria running his own shop. He's been robbed so many times, shot, stabbed, beaten up, followed home and attacked all for the shops takings; he only sells tomatos!
