Im just trying to get my head around this.

Basically how do cat 6 systems work,

for example a simple intercom system for a flat where you can buzz them in and can speak to them from the intercom phone..

Where would you get a supply for this because its not just like twin and earth where you can put it in a mcb .. also when wiring a intercom how is it actually wired from stage to stage..like does the supply go to a transformer then ...... then...........

thanks guys

This is a basic door entry system.

As Lee has linked to, a door entry system would normally be supplied from a fcu to a transformer/power supply, different style of wiring to your normal low voltage supply cables, some systems, especially in the past can be complicated to the inexperienced, but as is with most things, when you know how to do it it becomes easy!

Thanks leesparky it clears up alot of things, so it doesnt matter what colours you use on the cat 6?

Colours don't matter really, I normally use brown for my positive and blue for negative, orange for common and green for contact wire (N/C or N/O), there is alarm colours as well but if you're wiring it then you just stick to what you want at both ends!

Thanks so far for ur help

whats the time clock for?

To allow services ie the postman into the flat at certain times!

If if you have the opportunity to get into this kind of stuff you should, I find it a lot more satisfying than the usual lighting/power wiring, and you can come across some situations which require a good bit of thought, gain experience very quickly that way!

it really does sound interesting...im one of those people i dont like to just wire according to the diagram i want to understand how the diagram actually work ...e.g, when someone pushes the the buzzer from outside it triggers power to go here then ......... then.......

A bit of a bad example of cat6, as you wouldn`t normally use on a door entry system, due to being solid brital cable.
Its used for computer networks, serving data from server room switches to cat6 outlets, and telecommunications.

Yeah Belden or equivalent (far cheaper and well up to the job) is the best bet, but for internal systems Cat5/6 is suitable, there is 2 kinds of copper used in them can't remember the names will have to look it up, one is seriously brittle and breaks easily she terminating, I used a wholesaler who only supplied this type, they ended up changing to the better stuff when I brought it to their attention!

As for your door entry question......ref Leesparky`s diagram....The speech unit is basically 2 amps. + & - are the 12v supply. and T,O,R are the communication paths, O = common, T= talk, R= receive this is constantly running to all telephones for 2 way speech. The I terminal from each phone, is the door release button, giving + 12v when release button is pressed.
The only uncommon cable is the call button, depending on which button is press, a -12v is applied to the phone activating the call buzzer......hope this helps a bit, along with Leesparky`s diagram
