Mods I have asked this before can you give me access to the alarm section please . Been wanting to install a cctv system to my house for a while now and today after another break in local to me I'm taking a trip to the
ocal wholesalers to get a basic cctv kit and install it myself not done one before I'm sure there easy enough to do but any advice would be welcomed cable type etc and type of kit thanks in advance anything to deter these scum bags

For access via connected devices a wirless adapter isn’t a requirement it’s nomally just a DDNS service or if you have a static IP address it’s just a case of configuring you router, kinda similar to how you would for an application like a webserver.

If he cannot be bothered to run a cat 5 / 6 to the router then a wireless adapter is needed to connect to the local network

I always put in loft so if a break in occurs this is the safest place for the unit to be, and usually connect to upstairs tv I use a tp link to connect to router

I thought you meant access by smartphon over WAN rather than LAN :icon6:

What difference would it make whether you connect via a Wide Area Network or a Local Area Network if the DVR isn't connected to your network by a cable then you would need a wireless access point connected to the DVR for it to access your network and the internet

I follow you you’re saying those DVR units can be connected wirelessly to the LAN, I honestly didn’t know that.
Yes see your point if it not connected – no access – no difference.

As I said earlier in this thread I’ve researched CCTV haven’t bought the gear or implemented it.
I’d be using my NAS with software. I’ve spent out money on gigabit everything, I don’t like wireless. Primarily for speed stability and other reasons. I know it’s getting better and it’s much more convenient to install, it’s not there yet.
I’ve got 3 WAPs for phone and tablets, so I’m not a complete ludite were wireless is concerned. :)

I prefer a self contained unit rather than sharing my NAS. Don't like the idea of it constantly hammering away recording - more risk to other data - and should really be kept on a separate drive. Daz

I thought they didn't record until they were tripped and they could learn to ignore ambient movement like trees on a windy day ? Being serious BTW is this not true ?

They can be set up for this yes - I didn't have much success with the one I tried though. I leave mine constantly recording - no risk of missing anything, and you don't miss the first few seconds. Daz

They record 24 / 7 why else do you think these DVR's have terrabyte and multi terrabyte drives that will normally store a minimum of 30 days recording before overwriting, the movement detection can be used to increase the frame record rate or send email or text

No need for arrays or anything fancy for the cameras. A decent cctv unit fitted with a good quality hard drive. Completely separate to my main nas drive, which is raid mirrored. Daz
