Im a member of the NIC EIC Domestic installer scheme and ive been asked to re-wire a warehouse, Would i be able to undertake this kind of work and provide a certificate? Am i correct in saying i does not come under part P as it isn't a dwelling?

Do you feel competent enough to design and construct the whole system and further test and inspect?

This will involve cable calcs, wiring systems possibly 3 phase.

If you feel you are competent and you can stand up in court and prove that to a judge if it has gone all pair shaped then crack on.

If your not 100% confident then do one of the following:
Pass the work to someone else and ask for a finders fee
Do all the drawings and post them up or buddy up with someone more confident and get them to look it over.

You are right - No Part P for commercial

If you are happy to do the work and feel confident, then crack on

I may be correct in saying, that organisation you are with have different colour certificates for all sorts on all jobs
You cant use their pretty red ones

Why is everyone saying if you feel confident. It is a electrical installation and the same theories apply to wiring a new circuit to a DB in a house as installing a 150 amp 3 phase supply to a machine.

Before Part P came along would you have said the same thing or has the whole thing made people think that just because they only wire domestic they may not be able to do anything else.

at the moment we don't know the OP's skill/qualification level. short course for domestics , or full college course. although the theory and principals are the same. there is a world of difference between industrial and domestic with regard to installation methods, cable loading etc., competent hose basher may be completely out of his depth with conduit/tray/trunking..

Go for it, you wont get the experience otherwise.
Do you know anyone that could help out if you feel a little out of depth, there is lots of experience guys on here that would be willing to assist.

I personally made the remark because times and competence are changing,in my time electricians could operate in all sectors, that may very well not be the case nowadays
Iin my thinking,if he has been in the trade for a long time and/or done work other than domestic/single phase then he would have been be well aware of the answer to both of his questions

Cautioning someone who is not known to you, surely its reasonable and not in any way a form of critisism

I know what you mean, I would feel pretty confident doing most types of installs, from domestic upto installing 240mm 4 core SWas, now I may need a little guidance with some bigger stuff, but i would ask or leave it well alone.

Now I know that not everyone is knowledgeable about every type of install. But surely if they are not confident they won't take the work on or at least ask for advice. Neither of which the OP did. Now if they are silly enough not to ask when they are unsure then I am sorry but they get everything they deserve.

agreed. my post was made not knowing the skill level of the OP. i would have thought that if he was competent to do the work, he should not really have needed to ask the question.

Thanks for the reply

The one question he did ask that would give cause for caution was

Would i be able to undertake this kind of work
I suppose the question can infer 2 things

He is asking if his domestic installer status permits or
Is this work within the scope of a electrician who can work solely as a domestic installer

Maybe,we are at fault for not asking him to be more precise with what the question is really asking

What planet do you live on?

Times are hard and people take on tasks that they are not 100% confident about - thats how people learn!
Some people are so hard-up for cash they will take on any job!

How many time on here have we seen a home owner asking can I do this?

Yes this electrician is NICEIC but he asked if Part P complies to commercial - fair good question as he was not 100% sure, but then that tells us that he has not done commercial before - questioning his competence!

We are all here to advice and nothing more

There are some of us on here who like to have a bitch and moan about everything going - this needs to stop!

Everyone is fighting for the small amount of work - therefor most people take on jobs which are alittle out of their reach - some do a really good job and some dont - its all learning.

The problem is Part P, some folk don't understand what needs notifying. They also seem to think because NICEIC do 2 different types of scheme they must be enrolled on their approved contractor one to do Commercial and Industrial work. In reality you don't need any qualifications to carry out work on them installations. I know this has been done to death on here, but it keeps rearing its ugly head because of the confusion caused by some scam.
