Discuss Changes to NVQ Level 3 in the Electrician Courses : Electrical Quals area at ElectriciansForums.net

mart the spark

I believe that NVQ L3/C&G 2356 is going to change in January 2011.

......Can anyone enlighten me on what the changes are??

ok..I only put forwatd what was asked of me the other day...where the college enquired whether I already had the tech cert as that was a requirment to reg for the 2356 even though the 2356 is stand alone as u quite rightly point out

further more looking at the C&G website I think if I'm correct the 'stand alone' only pertains to the fact that one can do the 2356 after the 2330 L3 on not necassarily at the same time and is not joined or part off, but if one checks with learning centers it seems that the 2330 L3 is a reqirment, if on the other hand it's an appentiship then the L3 is combined of course with the AM2, therwe is no req to do the AM2 with the 2356 if ur over 25

hope this clarifies things a bit more

There is often some confusion with the colleges who quite rightly want all candidates to have the 2330 level 2 & 3 together with the 2356, this way it gives the candidates a solid foundation into the electrical contracting industry. However, as stated previously, there are many, many people out there who, although not qualified, have more than the required competence and experience to undertake the tasks outlined in the NVQ 2356. Remember this is a work based qualification.

As such, "there are no entry qualifications or age limits...Assessment is open to candidates who have the potential to reach the required standards" (Page 16) National Occupational Standards www.kefax.co.uk/assets/NOS_2356.pdf

i can't beleive this is changing already!
why bother with the on site assesment diary at all then? if you have proven your competent by undertaking the am2 practical assesment and have completed the college based courses.
never mind anyone doing domestic installations and having to be assesed again by another body.
i can't beleive these organisations can keep moving the goalposts for new starters and charge so much for doing so!
don't they no there is no work out there? its going to be cheaper to do a degree soon, who is going to pay for all these requirements ? never mind the minefeild of training providers courses etc.

I'm in the same boat mate... I'm sick of it as well. One example is on their [JIB] website, where they say that you can be awarded a 'provisional' sparks card, if you have an endorsement. I had two approved sparkies with over fourty years in the business between them and I got knocked back. I'm still desperately trying to get onto a firm in order to get my NVQ3. Otherwise these last 10 years that I've been a mate and trainee spark have been for nowt. All them years, working all over the country as a mate, and not getting college done have come back to haunt me now.

it can be done through agency work, as long as you are local to the college you are doing the nvq through.

Yer, I know that thanks fella. However working for agencies comes with its own problems, as you may know. I'm trying to find an electrical company that will take me on full time - obviously not easy in this day and age. My problem with agencies is; that NOT one of the twenty agencies that I'm registered with - have work that will last for more than a few weeks and I ain't prepared to leave my part-time job for that.
So in the mean time my tools are getting rusty, my old body is getting older, and I'm at a cross roads as to whether to leave the industry altogether. I've got some interviews lined up for the first couple of weeks in January, along with the fifty thousand over people that have probably applied for the positions.
