IS A BIG NO NO.

A while ago I saw a picture of what resulted when an Electrician attempted to change an MCB in a live 32 way board.

Melted copper blobs everywhere.

Anyone know where I can get a copy of such a picture please.

Need to educate a non technical minded management.

Sounds like you work were i am, were the MD has no idea what is involved in working with Electric - he just sits there waiting for the money to come in, then gets a shock at time on site and materials the tool !!

A non-technical minded management...the education they need, is a firm fist on the jaw :)

Bit harsh expecting that of you, although in certain circumstances you can't do anything other than work live - at your own risk of course.

Show them the EAWR...it's a statutory document, they have no argument.

Always safely isolate people.

Regardless of what everyone will have you believe here .... excluding domestic it can become inconvenient to power down a board just to pop an mcb into it, it can be done safely but you need to know the risks and i dont mean the obvious ones... i.e. some old brands of 2pole and 3pole mcb's had large terminal apertures and if offered up to the live busbar stubs could short 2 stubs out on one terminal if out of line.... i always fit Merlin/Schneider boards with lock off busbar stubs which are ideal for leaving the power on to all other circuits and no power at the stub you connect to. Its up to the COMPETENT! electrician to weigh up whether powering down is required due to the age of the install the mess inside the board etc ....whenever possible yes always best to power down ..... believe it or not ive seen apprentices pushing in mcb's onto live pins while the mcb is in the on position and watching in horror as their finger is only mm away from the outgoing terminal..... now in this case competence is the issue and all apprentices etc should practice safe isolation all times until they have enough experience to knowledge to make their own safe judgement call.
