Hi all
Just thought id share with you this horrendous bit of wiring I discovered today

been working at appartments ( meant to be top end ) when they were built the main builder went bust and apparently the trades on site didnt get paid, so there are massive probs everywhere with bad plumbing wiring going pop, and paint peeling
bear in mind these appts are less than 2 years old and check out what I found when I removed the board cover
cast your eyes to the incoming neutral at the top of the RCD main switch
I nearly fell off my ladder:eek:

I mean WTF

It was used by my local street lighting authority then in there wisdom they realised it is one off the most vulnerable cables ever created.
IT has pvc outer sheath then the singular earth cores and individualy insulated neutral cores spiral around the phase conductor throughout the cable length . Hit it with a shovel and watch the shovel explode poor civils.

As lenny stated this is not how to term the cable ,the neutral cores should be bared twisted together and oversleeved forming one conductor same for the earth cores.

The cable acts as a natural capacitor and will hold a megger charge for hours if not discharged its a fail on every possible level.

its used as the feed cable in most static caravans, which is where i used it for many years.
ive never known that you had to twist them together and over sleeve them.
we used to put 16mm split con into 32a commando plugs - now thats a task im glad i no longer have to do.

with regards to this cable, on one of the photographs there is the split con cable, with what appears to be a white and also a green conductor visible, as well as the bare earths.

What are these two coloured cables for?

The line, neutral and earths are present. I just dont get what the white and green conductors are for...

theyre not conductors mate

I believe that the white and the green looking cables are actually nylon and are used by the manufacturers to identify the cable and types, either that or they are there when the cable is constructed in the factory and the nylon cores are there as the base to which the other conductors are wrapped. This is just a guess sure someone will enlighten us both.

Nylon strings are used in telecom multicores to wrap and identify bunches, and are also used for that making-a-cut-and-pull-the-string-down-to-slit-the-sheath trick that many people do with the CPC in T+E - the nylon cuts your hand to buggery, mind. I imagine they make each conductor with the nylon attached and just leave it in regardless of how many cores are being used.
