Hi all
Just thought id share with you this horrendous bit of wiring I discovered today

been working at appartments ( meant to be top end ) when they were built the main builder went bust and apparently the trades on site didnt get paid, so there are massive probs everywhere with bad plumbing wiring going pop, and paint peeling
bear in mind these appts are less than 2 years old and check out what I found when I removed the board cover
cast your eyes to the incoming neutral at the top of the RCD main switch
I nearly fell off my ladder:eek:

I mean WTF

think they are segregation cords they seem seem to be placed strategicaly to seperate the earth and neutral looms as they spiral around the phase conductor also providing an even circumf for the outer pcv sheath.

ive done my fair share of split con work, weve always gone into the cu as out feed as is shown.
we were just never told/taught to twist the ends together.

The main terminating screw for a 16-25 mm core aint shaped to hold numerous single cores when you think of it that way it makes sense i wonder how many of those cores have the correct metalic contact.
The earths can be unwound from the phase core but keep their shape and a perfect core is formed easily but the neutrals need to be poker straightened with a little jerk from your pliers like straightening a micc core, then the sleeving removed from them , providing they have been unwound and straightened in their natural order bunch them and start twisting pliers whilst moving hand to and fro the cable this slight bowing action seems to work the twist down the cores well forming a crimp friendly core (after about 20 attemps ):)

I too have seen and used split con many times. sometimes i bring it directly into cu and other times i fit a cut out and bring tails from the cut out into cu. Split con is a handy cable to use. I am a bit surprised how many have not seen or used it before.

Not really. This would be the case if it was a grub screw only (like on the cheaper terminal blocks), but on terminals like these it's a clamp, so you should be able to obtain a good connection to all conductors.

Surprised me too! Weird.

excuses excuses :D what if its a v plate like the vast majority of terminal fixing plates on main incomers , isnt it totaly frowned upon to secure multiple cores with a singular term screw .

Just trying to justify the spec for a streetlighting cutout you do your heavily popualted high load buildings mains incomers how you like ;)

The white strands in the cable are basically there to "make up the difference" generated from the sizing of the earth and neutral conductors.

I have also seen many supplier cut outs using spilt con, and all they have are screw terminals.
