Hi everyone,

I'm still fairly new at this game. I have come across a really basic problem but it's really cost me a lot of time and swearing.

I've been re-wiring a fairly old house. The existing wiring was all surface mounted in trunking. The client wanted the new stuff chased into the walls. No problem I thought, especially as a plasterer was coming on site to do all the walls after. The walls were plaster straight onto brick throughout. After chasing all the channels for my cables I came to clip the cables to the wall before I put capping over them. The mortar was that old it kept crumbling everytime I tried to put a clip in. I managed about 6 in the whole house before I gave up and ended up drilling and plugging the capping to the wall to hold the cables back.

Does anybody have any better solutuions as to what I could've done? It ended up taking me an age to secure all the cable runs.

go and get some 2 inch masonary nails (thin) to replace little ones you get winth the clips, works well on thermolite blocks as well, and use same for capping.
have you tried clipping straight into brick, you may be surprised if old they can be nailed into quite easily.

As others have said oval conduit is easier to fix. Another tip for an instant fix to the wall is to get yourself a bottle of superglue and a tin of activator. Use a few dabs of superglue at various points on the conduit and hold it there whilst spraying with activator, it will bond instantly!!

Just don't get it on your hands!!:D

Some capping nails are bettet than others. I think the best ones I've used were made by Thorsman (available from discount electrical - although they make take some time to arrive) Screw and plug with a big washer on the screw should hold the capping on nicely.
