Evening all!

2 questions?

1. when testing a commercial premise Is it my responsibility to point out to the client that the emergency lighting is insufficient or non existent in certain areas of the building?

2. I've never tested premises with a potentially explosive atmosphere before..so I have a situation where I've got a paint mixing room. the paint mixing equipment has the Ex symbols on them. There is also an Ex heater installed in the room. The vapours are quiet strong when entering the room. There is an isolation switch outside the room to kill all sockets. The sockets are standard square edge unswitched doubles supplying some Ex equipment and an extension lead (cheap) a couple of desktop PC`s ,labelling machines etc. The lighting (2 x 5` twin HF fittings with angled reflectors) circuit is part of another lighting circuit with a class 2 motion PIR as a switch (activating the lighting and extractor fan when entering the room) The lights are deffo not Ex and the fan has no info on it.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

In answer to 1 an eicr does not include emergency lighting apart from the fixed wiring. In answer to 2 I havent a clue.

By the sound of it you are conducting a EICR in a garage repair shop or similar premises. If so their are going to be other Ex locations which by your own admittance, you do not have sufficient experience or certification to conduct to acceptable levels. You are therefore working outside of both your own insurance indemnity cover and the customers insurance companies requirements. not really a good position to put yourself in....

Judging by engineer54's post I might possibly need separate certification for this area. Is there anyone with any advice out there.

Whilst it is true that you are conducting an inspection as to the safety and suitability for continued use of the electrical installation, BS7671, does require you to take account of other Standards and Statutary Requirements that may pertain to the installation you are inspecting.
If you do have concerns regarding any areas that you feel you don't have sufficient knowledge or experience to make informed judgement about.
Then all you can do is list your concerns and advise that further inspections by persons with the specialised knowledge in those areas should be conducted.
It may be educational for you to be present during any such inspections, if they do occur.

Honestly?
This is not having a go at you mate but try to sub this out. Put your rough location up and there'll be someone near you on here. They might be prepared to do it with/for you.

You will need intrinsically safe test equipment to test in an explosive environment , You do not report on an EICR any failing with the emergency lighting but you could always do a separate quote with your recommendation if you have the knowlege to design and emergency light installation

I wish anyone luck trying to find intrinsically safe electrical test equipment. You may find a multimeter, but that's about all!!

Been on sites for long enough to handle a bit of stick lol. Should be a breeze on a keyboard.

So how do you test these enviroments? I guess you just have to use the multi meter and intrinsically safe thermo camera , I have always just walk away when been ask to test these areas , you would probley course more harm than good taking the installation apart to inspect
