amckay, I hope you had someone footing them ladders?!

ladder is on grass. no way it's going to slip when the ends are bedded in an inch.

Pre-apprentice here.. this was some of the college work we did before christmas.. pretty proud of it due to it being my first attempt of conduit and trunking.. only had 1 shot at it as they were trying to save on waste materials.. DSC_0145[1].jpg The entire thing is made from 1 1.5m 50x50 trunking with cover and 1.6m (roughly) of conduit. Hardest part for me was forming the 45 bend on the trunking.
Once it was complete, we did the 3 dead testing procedures: continuity, insulation resistance and polarity. Havent started live testing as of yet.

Didn't do a practical class in secondary school so i don't think my metal work is very good, was interesting to learn though and i'm pretty sure the more you do these things the easier it becomes :)

you gents have shown nothing but generosity to everyone on this trainees section.......

i will see if i still have the photos from a couple of installs i done last winter

Well lads we have 3 install entries so far, I suppose if no one else enters then 2 of the 3 entrees will win a prize.!!

This is quite rubbish, and very simple, but I'll put this up as it was a learning experience.

4 core 4mm SWA, already poked through a plasterboard wall and cut to approximate length, I had to clip it to the wall and terminate in a metal 3P DB. There was an additional 6mm CPC, as the aim was to reduce Zs on the dist board circuits as low as possible.

SWA1.jpg

SWA2.jpg

I was told to cable-tie the CPC to the SWA rather than clip it to the wall. I was told to use a closed 20mm rubber grommet to pass the CPC into the metal DB, rather than use a stuffing gland. The environmental conditions are not onerous at all. The cable is not near/over an escape route, so I was happy to use plastic clips. The run is level, the clips are 400mm apart, as per table D1 in the OSG. Bend radius is about 12cm (minimum ~9cm, table D5).

If I were to do the same job again, with the same limitations on fixing materials, I would measure the distance between the two 90 degree bends and work out how to space the clips evenly (making sure they were spaced <400mm apart), I would try to get the SWA more perpendicular to the top of the DB before making it off, and I would put the cable-ties on the other way round so the knobble was at the top out of the way.

This task (which took me over an hour, including terminating the SWA in the board) taught me that there's quite a lot to think about, even for a seemingly simple task. I know this won't win any medals, but I thought I'd share and I'd welcome any comments. :)

Heading of to the big Mainland for a job next week, so will have some pics hopefully! I think we're doing everything from laying 95mm2 3c SWA, and 95mm2 alu singles from plant to switchgear to tranny. and your usual lights sockets conduit/trunking work (plastic) in the fibreglass but. Looking forward to it even more now!! Haha.

I'm at college on Wednesday so I'll get some pictures of my bay wall, also doing some panel building with a guy I know on Wednesday evening so I'll get some pics of that and the best pics of the two will be my entry for the comp

When I win can I have that Megger think in the first picure? The book doesn't have enough pictures in it for my liking and it's boring so I'll give it a miss if you don't mind.

As usual please mail my prize to Marvo when I win and I'll get it from him later.

Here's a DB I installed. It's pretty damn good and obviously better than the other stuuf shown so far but it's not my best work cause I ran of wire and sleeve so I had to make do with what I had but I think my method of swirling the wiring around the outside is much better and neater.

^^^ Ok who let Testaccount out of his cage?

If you see him, dont approach or try to apprehend him yourself. Please do not feed him after midnight or spill water on him.

i assume that the rat who made that nest is out of shot or deceased.

I'll be posting mine up next week when I strip my board and my tutor prints out the possibly new specs. this time around my conduit will be a lot better when i first did that board it was my first attempt at conduit and surprisingly fit together rather well with some "Gentle persuasion" and alot of foul language

Good luck fellas, a big thank you to GMES and Rob for this comp and being generous enough for these prizes.

Ok Doody I've made my mind up. Your doing the alarm panel change over a week on Saturday seen as you did a great job on the two new alarm installs last month. Make me proud and do a good job and post it up on here along side your college workshop board.

@ GMES. Is there any rules regarding a Trainee posting up more than one install/location?

I get a little OCD with alarm panels ... Rather annoys me that the bellbox in that new build is using a different colour code to the rest of the zones  and sweet, let me know when and I'll post both up that if it's okay to?

Don't see why not, they can't be chosen to win both prizes though.

Two people = 2 prizes, I agree with that Rob.

The colours are only identification of conductors, up to you what to use for the bellbox. The PIR's are diffrent lol. Post up both Doody.

@ Paul, I can't see why not mate.

Rob and GMES, good call allowing one entrant to post more than one picture. I like that.

2015-01-21 15.17.06.jpgCollege work of the day was a Lighting circuit with a ring circuit.. nothing fancy but we had to make sure it was tidy as being used as a display peice.. the twin and earth cable is not the best to be honest..

Kevio it is a good bit of board work mate, dont knock your self. You mention the T&E, the first skt on the RFC is not flat to the board, but at the end of the day, good work.

Bit of a tip for everyone. T&E needs a bit of warming up on bends. Just hold it in both hands for 10 seconds and then create the bend  Try it next time.

Good tip from Paul. Along the same lines always keep insulation tape in your pocket and when bending PVC conduit apply a masturbation technique to the area you want to bend.

Ah, that explains the nice bit of ply... thought that was a bit posh for a temporary job! :) Good work. :)

BUMP!!!!!!
So do we have anymore trainees willing to show us their work, It doesn't have to be huge to qualify, just some form of installation.

Does it have to be the comp entry? or just a bit of installation?

Well I would say yes if it is in this thread mate, but what a separate thread dedicated to all your installs and we can see the progress all the trainees are making along their journey, showing the way you all develop your skills with experience.
Maybe one of the Team could create a sticky!!! And all new pictures can go in there.

I want to put my college bay wall up for the comp entry but just as not much being posted maybe a seperate thread where we can post some practice shots up!

Apologies for blurry images! Part of a kitchen gas safety system that we put in. The new system consisted of two CO2 sensors mounted at the same level of the extract canopy above the gas cookers, and monitored the CO2 concentration during kitchen use. This system was an update on the older one, as rather than just shutting off the gas when the extract fans failed, it has a bypass button on the panel, which keeps the gas on, so the chefs can finish off lunch, dinner, etc. The CO2 sensors will shut off the gas when a critical level of CO2 is reached. All connections were numbered and connected up to a wiring diagram, linking the gas valve, fire alarm panel, emergency stops and CO2 sensors. Wish I'd taken more pictures now, as it was done before Christmas! :)

I like it! Good description as well, gives a good understanding of how those work :icon14:

I would enter if i had any pics of work i have done. Had a couple of boards on an old phone (long gone).

Will certainly take some when i land another job. Have been out of work for what seems like forever now. going to make some calls monday and see where i get.

I wish I actually took photos of my work. Just have a random few of board changes (got less to use the more competitions I enter!)

Good idea if everyone agrees? A sticky thread that any Trainee can post up their installs with a little description of what they have done. Feel free to copy and paste your old photos from this and previous threads to get it started.

Edit:- We already have a "trainees show us your installs" thread and already have 4 pages of pictures and feed back. Do you want me to make that a sticky or start a new thread?

Paul if it would probably make sense to make that one a a sticky.

Regarding this competition I am slightly worried that from what a lot of the trainees are saying, they don't have any pictures to offer up for the competition which could prove unfair to quite a few of them.

Ok I've made that one a sticky.

It is difficult for some members to do work that they would post up for a comp in 5 weeks. If you want to extend the deadline please do so if that is ok with the Trainees. It is your and Rob's comp, long as everyone is ok with extending the entrance date go for it. Staff will help out in any way we can.

OR:-

Keep this one as it stands and I/or another Mentor (may be Sintra) can start another comp up straight afterwards for another prize? This doubles the amount of time for everyone and is fair to all. Your choice mate.

Another idea I had was to have a "Mentors install comp" in the TS? The trainees can be the judges, should be fun
