Do you require to be Compex qualified to work (even just to open) on Exe fittings/Dist Boards.

I say yes, having been Compex qualified previously BUT my current company say no.

If anyone has any Regs i can quote it would be appreciated.

Regards.

Why do you need this training? If you're employers deem it to be required they will sort it for you and pay. I really can't see the point continuing unless you have a need to go ahead.

me????
believe me, my company will not pay unless they REALLY have to.
to sign off the electrical test & inspection sheets my understanding was you would have to be Compex qualified as the components/Db's are all Compex rated.

The equipment will be Atex certified and not Compex rated.
As for training, Health and Safety at Work 1974 states you shall have sufficient information, instruction and training to do your job. Section 2,2,c
Compex training does not prove competence for example they dont teach you about Ex 'o'

The European Standard IEC 60079 which covers Electrical Apparatus for Explosive Gas Atmospheres passed into statute law in 2003. Compliance with this is mandatory. In answer to the various opinions stated on this forum BS 60079-17:2003 which covers the Inspection and Maintenance of Electrical Equipment in Hazardous Areas states in

4.2 Qualifications of personnel
The inspection and maintenance of installations shall be carried out only by experienced personnel, whose training has included instruction on the various types of protection and installation practices, the relevant rules and regulations and on the general principles of area classification. Appropriate continuing education or training shall be undertaken by personnel on a regular basis. Evidence of the relevant experience and training claimed shall be available.

The equipment that falls under this standard must have ATEX Certification for use within the European Community. Compex is a company that supplies training covering BS 60079, hence the name Compex Trained. Hope this helps.

Well that just about sum's it up nicely, ...Thanks!!

I would also wager that insurance companies have had a major input, and that appropriate insurance cover would also form part of any installation/maintenance contractors contract....

BigSi,where did you do your course?

It was a company called ‘Needwood Training Associates’ based in Banbury (Oxfordshire).

It was a three day classroom based course, which basically allowed us to go onto a forecourt and work on certain equipment. We couldn’t work on the pumps them self, but we could change the lamps on top of them.
