Contactor Coil Current Rating?

Just out of interest what current does an AC Contactor coil take? I keep using 300va transformers in my panel builds but never take coil currents into account mainly only have up to 8 contactors. Cheers

most are designed to work on 3 phase so at least 400 voltes

What a load of twoddle contactor coil voltages depend upon what the voltage of the control circuit voltage is which can be 24, 110, 230 or 400 volts

I want the coil current when pulling in, not the control voltages...

It will have it written somewhere on the contactor, or in the data sheet with it.

Remember building panels to design your control Tx for all the items, plcs indicator lamps etc...

Most of our motor mccs use a 3kva Tx.

Measure the resistance of the coil then use good old ohms law.

Not its load current it will take, i.e 32a, 25a just simply the coil when energising 1a-2a??!

70VA inrush, 7.5VA sealed
Was told by a transformer manufacturer your typical control transformer is good for three time rated va for inrush of contactor coils

Ask your wholesaler for schneider catalogues they have loads of info coil va, contactor ratings for AC and DC, resistive and inductive loads lots of bedtime reading one catalogues in particular to ask for is The essential guide to automation

Contactors and relay coil currents vary between products and ranges -their is no 1 answer.... check the info supplied or go on their website - AC / DC and voltage rating will have large effect to the nature of the coil resistance

Typical values for small relays 12/24v ac/dc are 0.5 to 1.5 watt and 230v 1-5VA but again i stress its variable

Inrush also varies as with coil resistance but typical 5-10 times on inrush.
