OSG 8.4 H4 advises … A circuit of rating exceeding 15A but not exceeding 50A may supply two or more cooking appliances where these are installed in one room. The control switch or cooker control unit should be placed within 2m of the appliance, but not directly above it. Where two stationary cooking appliances are installed in one room, one switch may be used to control both appliances provided that neither appliance is more than 2m from the switch. Attention is drawn to the need to provide selective (discriminative) operation of protective devices as stated in BS 7671:2008 Amt 1:2011 536.2

EGBR 5.2.2 ii advises Cooker control switches, extractor fan switches etc. should not be mounted so that it is necessary to lean or reach over hobs for their operation. However, EGBR Figure 5.2 Kitchen Installation, clearly shows a horizontal safety spacing of 300mm from the edge of the hob to the cooker control switch, though this is not explicitly stated in the above text. The cooker connection unit can be mounted, where convenient, behind the cooker below hob height at a minimum of 450mm above the finished floor.
