I have sheared the bit off in an sds chuck of a core drill.

SDS drills are ok as long as it is powerful enough and you get a smooth action.

Its when the bit jams and the tool clutch starts operating is when the stress is put on the bit.
yer thats why i use a hex shank in a sds chuck adapter[ÂŁ5] so its the adapter thats in the sds drill not the core bit--works well,
ive sheared a sds drill chuck off before because i put the core drill bit which had a sds shank straight into the drill chuck[this does cause problems] make sure its
core.drill.bit/hex.shank/sds.chuck.adapter/sds.drill
Bosch GBH 2-26DRE 2kg SDS Plus Drill 110V <<thats mine and works 9/10 on red brick minimum 4 a week maybe 6 cores 4"[107mm] i'd say about maximum size no bigger otherwise the drill will struggle !
and 4" single fan tube/duct fits in 107mm but if your duct kit contains 2 halfs bigger + smaller so they connect then maybe the larger diameter wont fit but my eperience on domestic houses, ususally the inner/smaller tube on its own will fit and do the job [also long enough] so check this before purchase
the good thing about a sds drill is the speed it spins the core bit at- its faster so can be quicker than a core drill and just dont be too hard on it let the core bit do the work not the clutch and it will glide through nice and smooth !

would either hire a core drilling machine and core saw bit from HSS/Speedy Hire or if doing a lot of cores get in a core drilling company who will do it in half a day....

yes but its all about cost these days if i do a core i only get ÂŁ10 each so it wouldnt pay for a hire company or a hired core drill...
