thought id post up about my training so far in 2007 done my cg2377 PAT course at college working doing PAT testing for a few years.In 2010 decided i needed to pursue something more in-depth started my 2330 level 2 at college in london then progressed onto my level 3 finished that june 2012...gained some experiance along the way working as a mate installing fire alarm systems in large commercial buildings...now looking for a start as mate,may go down the agency route as i want to join more experiance an complete my nvq...an become a qualified and competent spark..

Been reading this forum for a few years,even threads that i know nothing about as iv found it interesting..lol

Thats my story so far...the journey continues...

Currently on my 2330 level 2 in college, by lvl 3 it will be mapped into 2357 so thats what Ill get at the end of my 3rd year. Ive also completed my 2218 aerial and satellite installation.

Completed my 2360 part 1 and 2 in 98 from Redhill college in Surrey but only worked on site for a couple of years before joining the navy, since then have gained my NVQ 3 and am a HV approved person doing my 2395 next week so fingers crossed back on site soon

You lot sound like experts compared to me. I've just started a 2365 level 2 course and am completely new to this. Decided to retrain after being a mechanic and diesel fitter for several years.
Can anyone recommend anything that is a 'must have'. I'm doing a ECS test in November. Lots of reading to do!

I served my time as a toolmaker, then went sideways into a maintenance engineer role, always done lots of electrical work in these jobs but nothing to any regs as the factory work used to be very slack in that way, engineering declined round us so much i went back to college and qualified as a plumber, but after being let down by sparks all the time I decided to do my regs etc and join a competent persons scheme, i was registered with Corgi for years untill they were taken over by Benchmark who i am currently registered with and i'm now doing my NVQ level 3 2356 online with XS training, still on the first section.........health and safety......arggghhhhhh

Runs along side the new 2356/7 course. Pretty much the same though really.

Its important in my vierw to have a theoretical understanding of the job you do, and not just fit it because thats what you have been told. This is the difference between and electrician and an installer ibn my view. Ive met many many installers on jobs, but very few electricians. Unfortunately most of them hold electrical qualifications.
Please dont be afraid to ask questions, because its only by questioning what you do that you will become good at it.

On my fifth (and last) week of my first college block (I'm an apprentice). Should be getting my ECS card tomorrow or Friday.

Doing NVQ level 3 Electrical Installation, cant remember/dont know what exactly that equates to but it's been a good start to a hopefully long and successful career!

Hi I am doing the city and guilds 2357 diploma in electrical installation and I am currently in my second year and I must say the second year is a lot better then the first year I have a lot of electrical experience but never had any formal qualification so I thought I would go to college and get the theory behind the practical I have also completed the peo nvq level 1 & 2 electrical route

If you’re working in the Electrotechnical Industry you need to get your hands on an ECS card.


It’s now almost impossible to gain access to a construction site without proof of identification, your competence and qualification levels.
The ECS card solves this problem. ECS stands for Electrotechnical Certification Scheme - it's the sole ID and competence card scheme for Electrotechnical operatives in the UK, and it's recognised and endorsed by the industry.
Holding an ECS card means you can prove your identity, your qualified status and your occupation when working on-site. It is affiliated to the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS). So when people say that you need a CSCS card - this ECS card is the one that's relevant to the Electrotechnical Industry.
