As defined by 14th edition of wiring regs it is a current operated earth leakage circuit breaker [now known as an rcd] as opposed to a voltage operated earth leakage circuit breaker which are no longer permitted since the 15th edition. It is rated at 500ma.

A voltage operated earth leakage circuit breaker is generally coloured black and are slimmer than an current operated earth leakage circuit breaker.

A voelcb will also have 2 x earth wires connected to it (normally the earth terminals are on the bottom face in the middle), 1 x from the consumer unit and 1 x going to the earth rod, whereas an current operated elcb will not have any earths connected to it.

Why would the 500mA ELCB itself be any code?

The OP hasn't mentioned the rest of the set up.. There may be 30mA protection on the necessary circuits?

Also, I thought that if it meets the regs at the time (assuming acceptable Ze) then it wouldn't be a code?

I'm more playing devils advocate, but its difficult to put a code (or lack of one) without more information.

according to an old post on the IET forum, it's a voltage operated device with a current sensor to the side. make of that what you will.

I think i'll just take another sip of ale and move on :smiley2:

that ranks in the top 10 of tonight's posts. just the word "sip" that worries me. "slug, slurp, gobfull, sluice, neck, are more appropriate.

oh, well, that explains it. pimms, moet, spritzers, and bloody mineral water that costs more per pint than ale. my heart bleeds. come up north and get some proper alcohol down yer neck.
