fear of cutting through pipes/cables underneath, even after setting the circular saw.I want to purchase a second hand detector and the ones i have had in the past have been about as reliable as draper drill any got any tips and recomend a 2nd hand detector to get of ebay

Hi Richard,
I thought you meant the modern 8' x 2' (2400 x 600) tongue and grove floor boards.
but it works just the same with 3' x 1' (900 x 300) loft boards, but oviously check the thickness of the boards

Hi
, yes I use this method alot. Then batten out and refit.

and making good as Spartykus says battens to make good

glen

so if you are rewiring you would use the holecutter and not lift boardS
sorry richard....been away from the pc mate......well the issue with these holecutters with the plastic access covers is the mounting costs of these access covers.......and as if on a rewire ....your going to need multiple points of entry under the floor....you`d be better with the circular saw....just set the depth about 1mm less than the thickness of the chipboard....you will find that it snaps easily enough and of course...you can dictate the size of the access hole you make......

I suppose a odd hole for a quick socket job but if you have to drill each joist that would be a lot of holes surely ?
if drilling joists....cut a strip along the full length of the cable run rather than loads of smaller holes.....and if you cut the strip wide enough....you can drill the joists in several places.....get ALL your cables through without disturbing the floor in loads of different places.......

Swear by my armeg cutter..
And have found several discs in reduced bins at DIY sheds marked down to 50pence each. Staff obviously not knowing what they are.
How many you gunna use on a rewire.? Even if it's 20 it's still only a tenner. Much quicker than a circular saw because of the speed of making good afterwards...

Do use mine quite often too. Just gotta make sure you get plenty of spare drill bits. Snapped quite a few on old floor boards

Hi Richard

More and more plumbing is done using plastic pipes which the detector will not pick up! and these detectors are not always accurate.

If its a recent property don't forget that it will be oozing with the acoustic glue they use now to stop creaks, even when its cut through its still glued down hard. I would tend to take out a section, why struggle? I do use the circular access cutter and plastic cover if I only need to get to one point, like above a ceiling rose.
