Octopus

Ok all, can anyone help me give an approximate date for the CU below? Its in a flat built in 1963 so I'm having a stab in the dark for late 1980's

Thanks

Soemtimes I question why I take out these perfectly good Wylex boards for the cheap plastic crap we have now just because we need to provide RCD protection to cables buried in walls, somehow I don't think these modern boards will last the test of time like the old stuff does go n forever and never shows any signs of overheating as these boards were normally only rated at 60A at the main switch.Another board I come across a lot is the MEM Q board with catridge fuses or breakers still as good as new no overheating or signs of decay.

Well, a bit of update now I'm back in.

I think the CU could well date back to the mid 1960's when the flats were built becuase all the conduit runs are connected directly to it. It had the 3036 fuses intact until 4 days ago when some "handy man" whipped them out and put in the 60898 breakers.

The EICR tests showed up no issues what so ever (there was a 30mA RCD before the board).

TTFN

There must be literally millions still left in service out there in the domestic and small commercial sectors!! Those old Wylex CU's revolutionised the typical existing fuse boards they replaced. They were the first completely adaptable fuse board (in that each fuse way could be any rating between 5A and 30A) that had an incorporated main isolation switch.

Only the adoption of requirements for RCD protection really polished these old CU's off. Well that and the max value of 60A on the main switches....
but lets face it...
how many typical installs utilising one of these boards will ever get to 60A?..

not many..lol..

i'd guess later on, 70's at least. what colour earth sleeving?
round my way if stuff is old, say 60;s, they were all 3/4 way wylex boards. 6 at a push.

Actually Wylex CU's came in multiples of two, the most common being the 4 and 6 way units. Not sure what the largest CU was now, either 8 or 10 ways as i remember. They came in a few layout variations too, some CU's being dual supply, some with a common DP main switch, that was mounted in the centre of the CU with the fuse ways mounted either side of it!!

12 way was the biggest they did, main switch in the middle with 6 ways each side.

They also did a 7 way with 6 normal ways on the left of the main switch and a 45amp way on the right of the main switch

Can't say that i've come across one of these boards... Must have been one of the last designs they put out!!

I was talking about the normal configuration CU's rather than the middle Main switch design...
