Hi all

Does anyone have a good link to where I can find the basic process to follow (with the design calcs) and step by step instruction for designing a new circuit?

I don't have anything particular in mind but after just passing my exams I wanted to write out a few scenarios and follow the process of selecting the right breaker, cable size, etc and then work out volt drop, all the stuff I know I'd need to do but haven't got any experience of.

I know I could use OSG as a lot of the typical circuits are already worked out but |I want to learn my trade inside out and have designs on doing the 2391-20 design exam soon and wanted a bit of a steer down the right path.

Thanks Widdler, I was hoping for something a bit more simpler to digest but I guess that's what I need to know so best get my head around it!

Where do you think the best place is to look for some real world scenarios to test myself on?

I'd recommend you get yourself a copy of this book.

It takes you through the process of designing circuits step by step.

Right here.

How much do you know about designing circuits?

Do you understand Ib, Iz, Ca, Ci etc..

if he just passed his exams then he should know this. Unless they were not electrical exams, lol, but that seemed to be what he was suggesting. Perhaps he just passed his driving test. In which case, congratulations.

Easy Voltz you were a beginner once I imagine!

I know what you mean but in truth the full scope of design wasn't covered in the 2391 exams unless I really did just fluke it, more along the lines of inspection and testing.

Widdler thanks for the steer on the book Ill buy it tonight, I can explain what Ib, Iz, is but I hadn't had the opportunity to put it into practice is all and I've found that asking those in the know really is the best way to find out how to learn properly.

Anyhow thanks for your replies.

One of the mods or admin put a link to a great form they designed to take you through the design process step by step (cable calcs anyway). I printed it off but perhaps someone else here can find it again.

Chills out man, I wasn't busting your bals. But you should have covered this on the 2330 level 3. Perhaps you need to dig out your old course notes.

Jeez m8 60 squid ! sorry to sound silly but if you have a electrical qualification can you not download the governments regs .....Here all the notes are available to download for free. Maybe were spoilt.
Make sure you buy this one..

Requirements for Electrical Installations: BS 7671:2008 Incorporating Amendment No 1: 2011: IET Wiring Regulations: Amazon.co.uk: Institution Of Engineering And Technology: Books

When you've soaked some of it up, come back to me and I will go through some worked examples if you like.

That would be great to find the link, there was coverage of some design mate but there was no scope at all and that's the bit I find interesting.

I understand the importance of testing but my god is was like puling teeth, I guess I want to hit the point I can design a system off a set of plans.

Not sure if its true but there is supposed to be some good money in the design lark and I want to reach that point as soon as I can.

Hold my hands up though, most of the stuff Ill be coming out with will be utter nonsense (being polite!) so feel free to rip me apart - as long as I get it at the end thats all I care about.

Ill be back to post some equations for you to have a look at after I get the book - cheers.
