Hi,

A kitchen fitter has just told me that I require a separate ring main for my kitchen that they can do when fitting the new kitchen.

Currently all kitchen sockets are on the downstairs ring main and we will be keeping the gas cooker(no increase in load).

All they will do is fit a new cooker hood and perhaps take out/put back existing sockets to tile around.

Is he correct ??

TIA

Steve

Gas hob needs to be 50mm from back wall.
gas hob - requires 750mm to hood
electric hob-requires 600mm to hood.
hob cannot go hard up to side wall,as 50 mm gap required, which is why they are usually in the centre(ish).
wall units-usually 600mm hob,600mm hood above,with wall units either side,no 50mm gap reqd.

So why do these guys think there needs to be this 50mm gap?
It does appear to be somewhere in the regs as I found a Corgi technical bulletin from 2007. This has a flow chart that basically says follow manufactures install guide and if that is not available then follow BS6172:2004. There is a diagram in it that does have a 50mm gap but that is below units of 460mm to the side of the hob with a gap of 760mm above the width of the hob.

If it helps a registered gas safe friend of mine stated that he would follow the manufacturers guidelines but would be required to achieve a minimum of 50mm from back wall and a minimum clearance on the side to say a larder full height unit of 150mm.He has to achieve that as a required distance away from any combustable material. The height of the extractor is usually 650 to 750 depending on output of burners ie a large centre wok type ring has more output so the hood must be higher. He reiterates he would consult the manufacturers guidelines in detail.
As to seperate ring (the original question) it all depends on loads and whats there and RCD protection so this I guess is sorted with other posts.
A word of advice ,lots of appauling kitchen fitters out there ,so be careful and get them to do a written quote detailing relevant regs and the extent of their work ie notify building control.
Good luck

It's not regulation to have a seperate kitchen ring, however it will minimise inconvenience in the event of any fault or any future alterations to the kitchen. It may be that they usually seperate kitchen sockets onto a seperate ring so that you can still use the rest of the sockets while they are tiling etc.
