Went to a job today for random RCD tripping, removed the cover of the consumer unit and was a little surprised to see the far left neutral bar had no "true" neutral feeding it
Was not a great install and glad i did not have to carry out a EICR.
Extended the neutrals over the the correct neutral bar, replaced the 2 broken sockets (which had water damage) and told the owner that the install needs a EICR doing (Fat chance has i feel he did the board change!!!!)

Weird one today, called out as they were getting random tripping of 1/2 the board, the 1/2 that had the up lights, down lights, cooker and heating on. That RCD would trip when they used stuff on the socket circuits (on the other RCD). It had only started happening in the last 3 weeks after the DNO fuse had blown for no apparent reason and had been replaced by the SSE.

The only bad insulation reading I was getting (0.0 ohms) was on the downstairs light circuit which when I finally removed the 2nd to last switch on the circuit, found this.

I can't understand how the RCD had ever stayed on in the first place. The RCD tested out ok and operates normally and within 26mS at delta 5.

They probably haven't told you the whole story, someone's probably fiddled with the wiring in the switch for whatever reason. It seems impossible for the RCD to stay on as that is a permanent connection and is not switched providing its wired correctly.
Main rule for me is
"never trust a client", there is often more to theilr story than they tell you.

Yes I wish they would be honest " I've f**ked up this switch it would cost them less money as it takes longer to find the fault than going straight to it and reconnecting correctly.

Love to know how they melted the DNO fuse, maybe something similar in the CU?

Swapping some pendants for some posher lights, do a quick Zs, uh oh. Fault-finding hat on, roughly half the downstairs lights have no earth. All the pendants nicely dressed, proper job, so a bit surprised, anyway my attention turned towards the switches.

I can just picture the conversation down the Dog and Duck... :

- "But what about the earth wires?" he said.
- "Just twist them together," he said. "Ooh! Don't forget the earth sleeve," he said, "Looks more professional that way."
- "Right-oh," he said.

One of our customers puts silica gel packs in their equipment to stop moisture damaging the PCBs whilst they're in transit from China.

To prevent them from being damaged or getting wet they seal them in anti-static bags... o_O

Reminds me of when we were waiting for a 4ft long precision machined square cut screw threaded drive rod to repair a computer line printer. It came from Dublin, they bent it in circles until it would fit in a Jiffy bag!
