From that comment it is clear you can't see the rest of the installation! The wiring at this site is some of the most non-compliant I have ever seen. Thank goodness the place is shut down.
In fairness, we don't have pictures of the rest of the installation.

I'm sure Tel wasn't suggesting a couple of fly leads on that gland would make the whole installation compliant.

Where was the heat from, careless plumber?

I've concluded that it originated from the cable. There are no pipes and nothing else in that area, which was covered by itchy poo.

Having spoken with the home owner, it could be a case of repeatedly re-energising with a fault present. It's unlikely I'll ever be able to get to the bottom of it, but investigating it has highlighted some other issues that need to be investigated.

Was that black scorch mark from the faulty cable? Maybe a screw or nail from the ceiling tackers has missed the joist and caught the cable?

I believe it is yes as the cable was burned brown on the side facing the joist. It was the scorch on the joist that drew my attention to it. The back of the cable (facing away from the scorch) has smoke damage.

As for a smoking gun so to speak, there literally was nothing that struck me as being a possible cause.

That cable may have been damaged being pulled in. That would tie in with the fault being repeatedly closed. It does not look the best installation . How old does it seem to be, and was that the fault you were called in for?

The socket that cable supplied has worked for quite some time according to the home owner, she used to use it for her vacuum cleaner. The fault was the fact the socket wasn't working and when I tested it, I got interesting voltage readings and no Zs due to the lack of CPC integrity. So my investigation was focusing on a possibly bad connection at the source, when I was tracing the cable I found that.

It's red/black cable, houses on that estate are late 90's I believe.

So a dusty carpet then. ;)
It may of had a hammering by the previous owner and left unused...

Quite, but it sounds like they haven't been without some issues, like an electric shower that went wrong and took out the supply, and as I say, an apparent lightning strike and the fact I think the socket circuit I added a socket to was once a ring and is now two radials, one 16A, one 20A.
