Yes, lack of common sense seems to be the norm now days.
Well, this just shows you that a lack of common sense was the norm a decade ago!

in fact, all health a safety beaurocracy, seen as too much red tape etc etc, all came about because somebody somewhere had an accident.... likely because they weren’t paying attention, or didn’t use common sense.

It really is not fair to blame Health and Safety bureaucracy for lack of common sense, in 1974 when the Health and Safety at Work act was introduced it was required to protect the workforce from themselves, I admit it has become a bludgeon to crack a nut since then, but common sense should still be part of our awareness at work.

An Obituary printed in the London Times

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
  • Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
  • Why the early bird gets the worm;
  • Life isn't always fair; and
  • Maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
  • I Know My Rights
  • I Want It Now
  • Someone Else Is To Blame
  • I'm A Victim
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

In the dockyard where I spent my formative years he also had a cousin called...

it was like that when I got here!.....

Themselves? Maybe partially but the vast, vast majority were being protected from their employers neglect.

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense,
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. By co-incidence I searched through the forums past posts for the phrase "common sense" some weeks ago. What surprised me is the number of times the phrase has being used, but equally how many posts indicate how uneasy we seem to be about applying the concept in the electrical trade.
The regs encourage us to use "all the SENSES" when assessing electrical installations. Why would we omit common sense??

Because it's not that common.

Unfortunately

Can't think of the correct terminology, but thats a bit of a myth. Cos things change from generations to generations. Things change, perhaps you won't, or shouldn't. But new generations will.

More DIY crap. The whole house was like this. Thing is the couple had only bought it a few months previously yet the surveyor didn't flag up the electrics as a point of interest at all. If they had then they could have an EICR done and possibly knocked some money off the purchase price. What would you recommend their next course of action be? I think they deserve compensation.

Fuse board was 16 edition clipsal. It had a plastic shelf glued onto the top. What should the surveyor be looking for? Right beside it is a bit of twin and earth dangling about an inch away from an incandescent bulb, all under the stairs.

That’s some rough work even for diy!
