10.5kw shower, 45a switch, 6mm T&E and a 63a MCB as the OCPD with no RCD. This is the result....

But at least they lined it up with the light switch.

To be fair, if the terminations had been secure and tight then that combination would probably have lasted years.

Looks like another case of bad joint /cheap isolator.

Notching the joints was the plumbers way, and I think electricians back then followed suit, and probably still do to a certain degree, as sometimes needs must.

Brings back memories though of live nails poking out the floor, or the missus shouting up the stairs that there's water dripping from the ceiling.


If that wiring was staying, I would notch some nail plates into the floor board, better than having to junction box the cables just to divert them through some joist weakening holes.

I still have a load of "SafePlates" in a box somewhere....

It looks like a 'Click' switch which are normally pretty good , probably just badly terminated. I hate those 10kW + showers, ridiculous amount of current draw really.

And, yet again, its the neutral connection that failed. Funny that.

I think some cowboys/ plumbers fitting showers think as long as the live is tight, it’s all good. Neutral isn’t that important, is it??

Always seems to be neutrals… with pull cords as well. And it happens with 7kW as well, but doesn’t make as big a bang as a 10

I never had a problem with 50 amp Crabtree pull cords, double terminal screws helps.

Some charge points have very low torque setting for supply cable - astoundingly low and I tend to spend a bit of time getting stranded conductors bedded in before torquing.

Should have tightened that neutral another half turn.

Assuming terminal screws are made from something more substantial than the cheese certain manufacturers consider acceptable for this purpose.

Don't put the junction boxes in the wall cavity it makes fault finding really hard - Builders again.

Buried in the Lounge wall, neutral continuity fault on Ring Circuit, found it with a Fluke cable tracker, couldn't believe how accurate it was.

The cable had been cut when they chased in some speaker cables, The line on the wall is where the tracker said the break was, impressive bit of kit.

Worked in a large government building where majority of lighting was wired in blue, black and earth single, blue being phase and black neutral. The sheer amount of fittings with reverse polarity was scary.

are you sure it wasn't black line and blue neutral?

most fittings can work reversed.... its just when line somehow gets connected to cpc that things get tricky... as the upside down sticker in the picture would could lead to
