Does anyone know how old this fusebox is?

This fuse box is in the garage of my new house, does anybody know anything about it or the age of this item, I'm not sure how safe it is and in what condition the electrics are in there, so I have left it switched off, it comes straight from the electricity meter and goes to a socket, light switch and a fused spur for the outside light.

I going to take an educated guess and say the fuse box, pull cord, socket were probably old when it was installed. Say it was done in the 70s or 80s, the stuff must been 20 odd year old at the time.

That old MK double socket would probably last another 20 years or more, they were very well made back then.

Yes I often test 1960s installations and when you think about it, it's well over 50 year old and still working and providing it's not been messed about with, I don't find much wrong, can't see the stuff we put in today lasting 50 years!

I was just thinking how poor quality MK gear is now, I swapped an MK 45A DP switch the other day as the the old one was broken when the tiles were removed, the model was the same but the quality was miles off. The new replacement resembled a childs toy compared to the old one. The new one had single screw terminals compared to the twin terminals, the entire assembly was so thin and light as if every possible gram of material had been removed leaving only the bare minimum. It was horrible to fit. On the plus side their 3 phase cooker switches are still being manufactured to the old logic design and are super.

We have still got one of these in our lounge house built 1972 had pull cord used daily gave up a year ago how much of todays will last that long ?.

Well okay, that's ruined my trap. There are a lot of threads with people buying properties, who intend to renovate the kitchen and/or bathroom, but baulk at the thought of rewire or partial rewire. Is the rest of your installation, similar to that of your garage?

Cool. Just bear in mind your garage looks as if it has been untouched since the electrics were installed, so it has aged naturally. The rest of your property has possibly been exposed to years of abuse by DIY'ers and kitchen fitters. The consumer unit or fuse board is normally a good gauge of what has occurred, care to post a pic for members to advise?

Very true, the fuseboard is a wylex one, but I will upgrade it to a brand new one soon, as this one does not have RCD protection.
