This may sound silly

I have to install a 16amp supply via a new DB as existing one full. My only problem is I am very limited on space. Now could I just install a enclosure with a 16 DP MCB which would double up as a main switch in a 2 way enclosure or do I need to have a main switch to isolate it too?

If you’re doing the job then you should conceder future proofing it to some extent. I personally would go down the road of a small sub board with a couple of spare ways. But at the end of the day it’s your decision.

Correction, the customers decision with your recommendation.

Just a thought - kind of assuming that you ARE actually short on space, rather than just the front panel on the existing board has some knockouts left? A lot of the newer boards are all made the same base size in stages, and have covers with different widths on them. It's not uncommon to have a couple of modules space left on the rail and you just need to get the stanley out. Need to fit a longer bus bar, but it's cheaper than all the faff of a separate board of any size.

Oh, and from experience, if you do have to fit a separate sub board, a DP iso switch + MCB is WAY cheaper than a DP MCB!!

sub board and leave spare ways for future you may be going back in 6 months to do something else and you will be glad you made this choice
