For adding an rcd or download grading an mcb for various reasons I've always used a mwc, is this correct or do I need a EIC as this seems alot of work for this?

Looking at BS7671 (& GN3), it suggests MEIWC (think Ihave my capitals in the right order) 'is intended for alterations or additionsto an installation that do not extend to the provision of a new circuit.Examples include the addition of socket outlets or lighting points to anexisting circuit, the relocation of a light switch etc. The Certificate mayalso be used for the replacement of equipment such as accessories orluminaires, but not for the replacement of distribution boards or similaritems'.

Definition of Accessory 'A device, other than current-using equipment,associated with such equipment or with the wiring of an installation'. No definition of 'similar items'.

So you learned chaps, MCB replaced by RCBO, EIC or MEIWC?

I think similar items to a distribution board would be a consumer unit or switchfuse/fused switch

The reason why MEIWCs are not intended to be used for DBs and similar, is simply because they are intended for single circuits.
DBs and similar are designed to have more than a single circuit connected to them.

I don't agree. I believe the reason is because works on a distribution board aren't considered to be minor works.

Thanks for your response chaps, as I said earlier I was advised the opposite, so I'll have a dig around in my inbox.
Well, I had a look round my inbox and couldn't find any email from Elecsa Technical on the subject, must have been a phone conversation I had with them.

So I emailed them, and they replied a couple of days ago with a response, concurring with you guys saying that a Minor Works can be used for a non like for like replacement of ocpd for example.
They attached a copy of an article of 'Connections' (Summer 2015), which I remember reading, but clearly not absorbing;
https://issuu.com/redactive/docs/con_sum15_full (page 43).

A synopsis here;
'A Minor Works may used for a like for like replacement of a single protective device or single item of switchgear. In addition, a Minor Works may be considered for replacement of a device not considered to be 'like for like' , but only in circumstances where a skilled person undertaking the replacement can verify that the replacement device satisfies the requirements of BS7671, particularly, for the safe disconnection of the circuit under overload and fault conditions'.

The article goes into slightly more detail, talking about new circuits, RCD replacement and more than one device.

So clearly my understanding was incorrect, and thanks for correcting me chaps. :)
