downlights

hi al, im no electrician but i changed the previous downlights today. Previously they had a transformer and now straight 240v.
Anyway all i did was just remove the transformers and put all the wires in the new lights. hope your still with me.:snore:
My question is' all the wires you see in the pictures are they legal for a 5 year cert cause im rentin the house out or do the need to be put in a like juction box. many thanks. (need any help with your floors give me a shout)

always assuming that the existing connections are good, then just fitting a choc box around them would be the easiest option. however, seeing the abortion the previous guy made3 at the lights, what's it like further upstream?

Because it looks rough and may not comply does not mean it is unsafe. Many installations in the Country look like that and have stood the test of time.

As you are" Letting" I would be inclined to have it I&T'd

You can get snap connectors from any wholesaler easily enough to do a proper job but perhaps of more concern is that they are not fire rated. With fire rated downlighters at £8 each I can't see any reason not to fit them.

BTW there is no such thing as a 5year cert. No cert is needed if you are just changing the old lights for new. If you are after an inspection (sometimes called the Landlords certificate) it lasts as long as the Inspector thinks reasonable for the installation and does not certify anything, it is a condition report. Hope that clarifies.

Some 240v downlights you buy use choc blocks and have a naff plastic cap on, so although this job looks bad it is only just worse than some standard (approved) lights. I guess they are 15 amp connectors so in theory basic protection is there and supplementary as they are not accessible. If it were me though.. I would be tempted to sort it with some wago boxes, clip connectors and flex.

To be honest I would recommend all down-lights to be fire rated.. Even though it is for fire barrier reasons, the attic space is more likely to have something fall or be put near the light that is likely to start a fire.. As has been mentioned they don't cost the earth...

Fire rated are generally the ones with a can on them. Only £8 at the cheap end so why not get them. There is no requirement to fit them although the legalities around letting are getting tighter and I am not an expert. Electrical work should not compromise the integrity of the fire safety of any building and I would suggest drilling several 80mm holes in the ceiling may be such a breach.

Don't forget that letting agents are just sh*** estate agents rebranded.

Its a typical and readily seen crappy means of getting something to work
In this industry,something that works is usually seen by the public as acceptable (thats why there are so many diy installs)

Unfortunately,because of the way training has changed these can be found with sparks installs as well

It would be a nightmare to see the job that the spark (who has taken so much pride in his work that he ends up with that abortion)would make of conduit, pyro,switchroom or trunking installs

I suppose it would be akin to entering the Beano for the Pullitzer prize or Mike Tyson for Miss World

I always fail to understand why people engage any tradesman without seeing references of past customers or just take a look at what they have done somewhere else.or by recommendation
That goes for all trades, but especially electrics

Is that the CPC just wrapped back round the cable on the back light?
