Drive way lighting

Hi guys

I'm going to be getting my driveway block paved In September. Now I want to put around 6 lights in, hopefully the block pavers can run the cable in when they concrete and stand and get them into the sleeves of the lights. Any one recommend led drive way lights at a good price?

Don't do it.

Sooner or later they will fail and then you won't be able to fix them without digging up your drive!

The lights? Wouldn't I just be able to change the light but keep the sleeve in?

Duct it? Back to a central point if the cable fails just pull in a new 1 ​

Well, thats all down to the correct design and thought put in before you start... as I said, I've seen many installed by muppets who give no consideration for when they fail.....

And the failure is more often than not down to moisture getting inside so called waterproof fittings!

In time 99% of cable glands will fail

Heat shrink cable glands are an option they slide right over the whole gland warm it up and it will never leak!

my local sells heatshrink that isnt.

personally i dont know why anyone would carryc2:1 heatshrink?

Using duct or pipe with recessed floor/ground mounted light fitting it's best to seal the ends with a proprietary duct seal into back boxes. The better the design of the light fittings, the longer you will enjoy a trouble free installation... If your going to use SWA then use the correct gland type and as has been suggested over wrap gland termination with a good adhesive lined heatshrink. Experience and workmanship is paramount with installations such as this. If the light fittings are of a non standard size, it's a good idea to purchase one or two as spares (depending on how many fittings being installed) while they are available, you'll stand no chance a year or two down the line.... lol!!

We use adhesive lined heat shrink for all external SWA terminations in place of shrouds, as well as for many other applications. All or most of the heat shrink we use is 3:1

If I'm honest I wasn't going to gland the swa off was just using it as abit of protection when laying the floor. I was going to either put a jubilee clip similar to lamp posts etc ur just use the internal earth of the cable

And you openly admit this on a forum full of other electricians!!! The armour should be made off using suitable glands and Earthed at the supply end regardless of using one of the cores as the CPC. If using the armour as the CPC then the SWA needs earthing at both ends.

It will be earthed at the supply end. I won't be there when they lay the blocks so was going to get them to put the cables into the sleeves then once it's set and the drives finished then make the armoureds off inside the sleeves

Show us the light fittings you intend to install in this block driveway, and get far better advise on how they should be installed....
