"If I make SORN does my vehicle have to be kept off the public roads?

Yes. There is one exception - when the vehicle is going to a pre-arranged MOT test and the vehicle has valid insurance for the journey."

This is interesting:

"Exceptions from requirement of third-party insurance or security
(1)Section 143 of this Act does not apply to a vehicle owned by a person who has deposited and keeps deposited with the Accountant General of the Supreme Court the sum of £15,000, at a time when the vehicle is being driven under the owner’s control."

That sounds to me like if you leave ÂŁ15k with 'the accountant general of the supreme court' you don't have to buy car insurance.
Presumably you get that back if you don't make a claim, which would be 2 fingers up to insurance companies trying to charge 17 year olds ÂŁ20k or so PER YEAR for a policy.

That was my thought DS after reading again Garage may "Lend " you trade plates or come collect car n use trade plates

I don't think they would lend me their plates simply because I'm not on a traders policy myself.

My bother-in-law can borrow them because he works there and he has a traders policy, so he would be fine to do it and he has done so before, but he can't make it Wednesday night.

I think I will just try to cover my arse by talking to the old shop.

I'm just getting a bit excited about these recent sunny days and the prospect of getting the Lancia back legal again...

P.S. It is insured through myself, it never hasn't been. Just no ticket or tax.

Five times world rally champion is bored of being stored....

Is it really that much of a big deal??? What's the chances of getting stopped on a short journey there and back to the MOT?

pretty high if you pass a plod traffic car with a ANPR device fitted (which most do nowadays)

lol yes they do my brother was caught out by a ANPR vehicle the spanner so they took the car he just got a new one cant believe him sometimes lol

IF you are just going to MOT station I would risk it then just go straight to a post office for the tax after take your insurance with you then if stopped show him the insurance and if before its tested tell him you driving it straight for MOT and tax it straight away after

Or as someone else has said ask a local plod

What happened to the good ol days where you might get pulled over once a year and you got a 'producer' which gave you sufficient time to forge whatever documents you needed and get a decent story lined up if necessary?

they were replaced with the MID, DVLA and PNC databases!!! no getting round it now!! if you dont have the insurance / tax etc your car gets recovered at your cost!!

unfortunately no...!! but the system has created a situation that the police officer knows for definite if teh driver has any thing to hide before stopping the vehicle and does not have to rely on producers and the like any more!!
